My mum is a leftie and manages fine with "normal" things, although she had left handed scissors for anything more complex than a quick snip. She also writes much much neater with left handed or triangle shaped pens. But other than that I would say not to get other things unless he is struggling, otherwise he'll find himself needing leftie things in future.Bump due 22nd September0

i'm right handed, well i'm not i can write with both left and right like my mum, but both our sons are left handed.
so far the only thing they have found much better and easier to use are left handed scissors. Our eldest son really can't get on with right handed scissors at all he ends up in such a pickle, but our youngest son can use right handed scissors ok, however he does seems to use them awkwardly.0 -
Me and my sister are both lefties and the same as most the only thing that I have ever needed is left handed fabric scissors. I'm fine with right handed scissors for cutting paper (as long as they are sharp) but as soon as it comes to fabric I get really frustrated - I remember at school my textiles teacher used to cut out all my fabric for me!
TBH I never even knew there were left-handed rulers or protractors and set squares!Silence is golden...unless you have a toddler. In that case silence is very, very suspicious!0 -
The one and only thing that I REALLY struggled with, and wanted to try and get a leftie version of was my school hockey stick!
They don't make them. I have been told that everyone has to play right handed in hockey (don't really understand why) and I think it's the only sport where this applies. I have a leftie and this is the only sport that she struggles with. It's so awkward to watch her try to compensate, it really slows even the quickest (child) player down.
I actually can see some merit in left handed items and I will be investigating the protractor for DD2. She doesn't use any special items (found scissors too late), but comparatively, she struggles with the tin opener and cutting neatly. I basically just believe in equality.0 -
I'm a leftie and the only left-handed thing I've ever needed is a hockey stick, I play all racket sports right handed but for some reason hockey needed to be left handed... never figured out why!
The only thing I can think of I use differently is clockwork tin openers, I wind backwards but it still gets the job done. Things like rulers I just tend to start at the number I'm aiming for and draw backwards to the one rather than start at the one and drag forwards to the target number (hope that makes sense)
The only left handed thing I can actually think I'd like is one of my kids LOL so far 3 are righties, one seems to be ambidexterous (writes with both, draws with right but he's only 4) and one is too small to know, I keep hoping at least one will be a leftie like me, I grew up in a house full of righties.:j BSC #101 :j0 -
I bought Marley some left-handed scissors, a can opener, and a potato peeler
I couldn't bear to watch him struggle with right-handed versions!
Andrew is going to be a leftie too. I'm outvoted in my own household.:heartpuls Mrs Marleyboy :heartpuls

I agree with most of the posters here and us lefties have been so used to right handed things that we have just adapted. I did get a left handed bread knife for Christmas though and I love it! I thought I just wasn't very good at cutting bread as I kept going into the loaf and ending up with wedge shapes. This hasnt quite changed my life but it does mean bread lasts longer! http://www.anythinglefthanded.co.uk/acatalog/chef_knives.html0

My now adult son is a leftie and we made v little concession to this through his childhood. He eats right handed as I always set the table that way and uses regular scissors. The one thing he has discovered he needs is a left handed potato peeler. He was chuffed when he got a LH cheque book and he sets his mouse to LH use. We live in a right handed world and if we make too many adaptions we make it more difficult for our children. No doubt some psychologist will tell me that I have caused irrevocable damage to him!!0

I'm perfectly ambidextrous, the only person who can write with their right hand in my house. My left handwriting is different to my right handwriting.
We didn't have any "left hand" things in the house even though everyone except me was left handed.0 -

I have a family member who always sets the table for me back to front as she seems to think left handed means I'd cut with the other hand, the first time she did it I was genuinely confused as I'd never come across anyone left handed who didn't have knife in right, fork in left like right handed people do.:j BSC #101 :j0
