    Steve1980 is correct.
If this computer belongs to her employer she should get the problem fixed by whoever is contracted to look after their IT interests.
If she loses data concerend with her employment from it, she could be compromising her job security.
People have employers' laptops going wrong every day - she's not unique, not even having it happen twice makes her unique. That's the way computers are. That's why firms have IT consultants and pay them a fat fee. I doubt it will cost the employer anything - they will be covered by an annual maintenance fee to fix everything.
Take it back to work and get it fixed there then, if some vital files go missing, it won't be her fault.
The only reason why she might not want to take it back for repair is if there are files on it that she does not want others to see.

    Don't insult me.

The OP has posted about her sisters WORK laptop which was given to her by her employer.

This would have been preinstalled with the programmes used and purchased by her employer. She should not be trying to do anything untoward on it as this could result in disciplinary action by her employer. Are you going to take the blame for it and pay out for a new laptop?

I have been working with IT for over 15 years so think I am qualified to give an opinion.

Insult you. You are doing a good job all by yourself.

It was stated that it was a WORK laptop from the very first post, but your first suggestion was:
If you have the recovery discs then I would reinstall the computer.

It was also stated that she didn't want to use the 'system recovery' or 'minimized image recovery' options on the 'Recovery manager screen'".

What happened to your 15 years of IT experience then? Where did it go?

    Your next post:
IMO the above won't work as you can't get to the desktop. I just clicked on the link for the windows recovery disc (which is the same as what is on the hidden partition) to be greated by a groupon popup.
of course was just pure comedy. Made so because the OP had stated that she was working from another machine.

Again, what happened to your 15 years of IT experience? Where did it go?

Your next post was again erroneous:
If it's a works laptop then she should return it to the IT department so they can go into the backend of it. She will be doing more harm than good.

Indeed the instruction which I gave was not likely to cause any harm to the machine even if it did not work.

On the other hand, you with your fifteen years of IT experience would have used her recovery discs to "reinstall her computer".

So rather than trying to come over 'holier than thou', if you can't help the OP, perhaps you should just get out of the way.

Perhaps. Either way, that is why it is important that the OP isn't given the haphazard advice that she received from steve1980.

A Windows 7 System Repair or System Restore is unlikely to do any harm to the system even if they do not work.

Thanks for all the responses, appreciated the input. Couldn't respond earlier as my laptop went kaput . Anyhoo, lil sis took her laptop back to her employers to sort out after all. Hopefully, she's learnt her lesson now to regularly back-up data .

I would have thought the company would have used offline files and had a backup solution in place for it's employees anyway.

If her employer hasn't got a system in place to automatically sync her documents and emails with the works server each time she logs-in at work, then they obviously do not understand IT very well.

  • can your sister not give it to her boss and get him/her to fix it? at least that way the responsibility is out of her hands. if your not sure you have backed everything up i would get an enclosure, take out her HDD and put it into the enclosure (you can buy one for a fre £££). plug that into another computer and take all her important stuff off.

Due to the OP not having any paragraphs in the 1st post I missed the word WORK.

You've obviously had a bad experience with men. Maybe you should take a chill pill.

System restore may not work as if its a work laptop the chances are it has the enterprise version of windows 7 installed with group policies in place and added to the works domain, if you fail to repair then it's a lot more embarrassing for her to take the laptop back to work and explain that one way.

I also work in corporate IT and have heard every excuse under the sun, especially from the PA who screamed and shouted and complained when her system crashed that she "wanted it fixed asap" only for us to find that she was running a property maintenance firm during work hours lol

    Edit.... missed post 25
