Posting on behalf of my sister.
She has a Windows 7, Hewlett-Packard, G61-401SA. For the last couple of days, when switched on, the laptop screen is been stuck on the 'Welcome' screen. The little circle just spins for hours in normal start-up and safe mode. System restore isn't working. I think i've successfully backed up the files onto dvd-rw for her this evening. It's a work computer and my sister doesn't want to use the 'system recovery' or 'minimized image recovery' options on the 'Recovery manager screen'.
We can run Windows/system32\chkdsk.exe from Computer Checkup, if it helps.
Any advice lovely peeps?.
Can't run any sort of spyware/malware software or anything. The screen won't move beyond 'Welcome'.

If you have the recovery discs then I would reinstall the computer.Estate Agent, Web Designer & All Round Geek!0

Hi Steve, thanks for the reply.
There is no recovery disk, but there's a recovery manager screen which gives the option to back-up files before reinstalling to the original factory state. My sis doesn't won't to go to this drastic step however. Not sure that we have safely backed-up everything before wiping the hard drive clean. Want to see if there is anything else we can do first.
Thanks for your help.0 -
These instructions with assist you in the repairing of your computer:
Download and save this Windows 7 Recovery Disc Image to a working computer if Windows 7 32bit or this image if Windows 7 64bit.
Next, download and install ImgBurn(No need to install the Google Toolbar. Remove the relevant tick). Burn the Image to Disc. Use this guide(skip step 2b)
You can then use these instructions to assist you with an automatic Startup Repair or further to that, System Restore. Further than that we will have access to the Registry via Command Prompt.

I'll be using my laptop which is Vista Home Premium to download the Window 7 stuff for my sis. Will there be any incompatibility issues?0 -

No, there will not.0 -
IMO the above won't work as you can't get to the desktop. I just clicked on the link for the windows recovery disc (which is the same as what is on the hidden partition) to be greated by a groupon popup.Estate Agent, Web Designer & All Round Geek!0

By "work computer" do you mean one provided by her employer or one that she bought herself to do work on. If the former then take it back to her employer.
As for what to do - can the computer been booted up in "safe mode with networking"?0 -
