Golden syrup substitute

Can I use honey or maple syrup instead of the goo that is golden syrup? I didn't like using the stuff, but my gingerbread men (people? ) recipe calls for 60mls of it.

  • Yes, you can and it's much better and healthier to use those instead of golden syrup! :)

  • You can, but I don't think it's any healthier. They're all basically sugar ;) I love golden syrup so I'm biased. I think maple syrup would be too runny, but honey should be OK.

i was told golden syrup was the poor mans honey :D
  • Yes Twink, it's definitely cheaper than honey and maple syrup (v. expensive). Btw, the Tesco value golden syrup is not nearly as nice as Lyle's. My kids love it on porridge, and I like it (occasionally) on a thick slice of white bread and butter - hm of course.

Yes, but honey is natural sugars, whereas GS is refined. Plus honey has various vitamins, minerals and trace elements not found in GS. Having said that, I love the stuff too, and although honey gingerbread lovely, it just doesn't taste the same as real GS gingerbread.

Late night baking going on here. I'm making gingerbread biscuits.
Can I substitute golden syrup with honey or maple syrup? Would that require an increase quantities?
It's all going wrong today - I melted butter instead of softening it, baked a cake at gas mark 2 for an hour instead of upping it to 5 after 20 mins. I'm sure more disasters await... Oh and I poured my potato salad cooked baby potatoes down the not-so-clean sink instead of just draining them  .

Happiness is not getting what you want - it's wanting what you have :D
    (I can't remember the originator!)

No more mishaps! Cake is lovely, potato salad gorgeous, as are the biscuits - although I did get fed up with cutting shapes, so made lots of squares instead :D. NOW I deserve to go to bed...

    Mr Proctalgia, well done.
