HSBC Secure Key

Source? Or is this an opinion?
No source man, its just based on 'opinion' but if you think about it, it will most likely happen to all KNOWN UK BANKS.
TSB - Have them now for there business accounts
HSBC - Have them for personal and business
BARCLAYS - Have the card reader thing
The other banks will no doubt follow, because online banking is very serious, and banks are getting more insecure about security this is why they bring out these card readers & secure keys etc.
Just the uk is far behind on this... Banks in USA/China/Hong Kong/Japan etc all use secure keys and its compulsory.• HSBC (Main A/C)

I got mine more than 5 weeks ago.
I threw into the bin so do not know the exact date
I am happy until today I have not got it ......
It is the dummiest idea HSBC has come across ...
IB suppose to be mobile, who want to carry this gadget all the time, imagine people are on holiday in Caribbean are they going to take this gadget with them ....?
Why do not they just follow Lloyds TSB or Halifax using mobile phone to send the code ...???0 -
I prefer card reader to secure keys tbh0

I doubt First Direct will change to Secure Keys or Card Readers. They base themselves on giving customers what they want and ease of service such as no ''Press 1 for this, 2 for that''. First Direct also doesn't have as many customers as most other 'popular' banks.0

Not many? well FD has, 1.16 million customers.. i would guess that is a very small 'NUMBER' to HSBC/TSB/BARCLAYS right?• HSBC (Main A/C)

To all those First Direct customers who think they'll never have to use a secure key/card reader...think again! I recently closed my HSBC current account due to the secure key requirement and called up First Direct to ask them if they had any plans to introduce the secure key. First their agent said they didn't have any plans, i asked him "are you 100% sure?" he kept me on hold for 10 mins and then said " sorry, we do intend to introduce something similar within the next 12 months"
Instead opened a gold current account with the N&P who's online banking security appears to be much more common sense based than the likes of HSBC. To log onto N&P's internet banking you enter a 7 digit customer ref along with random characters from your 10 digit alphanumeric password and your DoB. Whenever you make payments, their system again asks for random characters from your 10 digit password. Also you receive immediate email notification as soon as you make/amend a payment instruction. Sure, N&P aren't perfect...they don't do faster payments (yet) or accept CHAPS payments....however they offer damn good customer service (as good as First Direct) and i don't have to use card readers/secure keys etc just to have a look at my account balance online. Though i accept that one day N&P may decide to use these.0 -
damn I got it yesterday, annoying I need to carry it everywhere ...0

I'm sure all banks in the UK will introduce this kind of thing at some point, but obviously time scales will vary. You can't bank online in Japan without using some kind of device now, all the banks do it (or so I've been told, I'll be happy for anyone to put me right on this).
I don't bank with HSBC but I have seen one of the devices and it looks quite portable, although I agree I'd hardly be thinking to remember to pack it when I go on holiday!0 -
If HSBC would use a card reader, instead of a single device, at least I could have multiple readers (home, work, parents, in-laws) and use IB at each of these computers (as long as I have my card)
I don't mind the extra security, in fact I welcome it. The problem is that it's so inflexible. Carry around a bulky single use device or don't use IB anywhere but home. No alternatives, no smartphone apps, no sms-based system, nothing. Their way or the highway.0
