He may have to give up the company shop crud :D Nice tofu and veg stir fry instead... ;)

He could try going vegan for 3-6 months as cholesterol if diet related is mainly in animal fats supposedly, to see if it makes a difference but may be a step too far!!

Dietary cholesterol will really only make a difference in someone with borderline results actually, as we make most of the cholesterol in our bodies ourselves and it's in every cell.

It may well be true that dietary changes takes three months to kick in on average, I dunno. For me, because I was in between blood tests, I was able to see a dramatic positive difference in a month.

Most of the crisps, biscuits, pasties, chocolates etc being consumed in abundance on MSE are unhealthy. Too much sugar, too much salt, hydrogenated fat, umpteen additives blah blah blah but that chocolate taste is seductive and the crisps so crunchy.....

I wouldn't call it a treats cupboard more like a sin cupboard ;)

I am curious to know more about diet and cholesterol - my family could be said to have genetically high levels, but I don't but no idea if it could be the difference in diet so far why mine hasn't been high or what but I'd like another test to keep an eye on it all the same!

Kirri - I think he just wants to see if fitness and weight-loss makes any difference.
His baseline is 7.9, so just to see if there's any movement, downward obviously. If it's still above 6.5 and he's back to his "fighting weight", then statins it will be as obviously genetic.
He spoke to a Guy the other day who is very fit and who has suffered a recent stroke. The poor Guy was devastated and questions, "Why me". Doctors just told him he was unlucky and genetic. He now questions, "What is the point of fitness?" and he is fit!!
Under 6.5, then try diet for a bit longer. But they want it around 4.5.

    Lock the "goodies" away. lol
He's limited to just 2 Aero biscuit bars a day.

I am genetic - high blood pressure and cholesterol - don't smoke/drink and not obese. My Sister is the same.

I have cleared one drawer of the freezer! Just two more to go and I can buy a new freezer.

Last weekend I went to look at freezers and the salesman said that they last between 3 and 5 years now! The one I have had is on its last legs and is very noisy now which is not good as I am in an open plan apartment. But I bought it in 1993 so almost 20 years old and has never been repaired.

I've seen a nice Panasonic freezer but I don't want to spend too much money if it's only going to last 5 years. The salesman was pushing for me to buy an expensive 5 year care contract as he said that there was a lot that could go wrong with modern freezers! So I walked away without buying but must get a new one soon.

^ Nothing seems to last these days, puts me off buying anything but if a salesman said it would only last 3-5 years, even if that's a sales ploy to take out the care contract, it seems a silly thing to say, I'd walk out too or ask if he's having a laugh!

I've got a Liebherr fridge/freezer and it's been really good, seems well made, fairly quiet too.

Had the cold pizza for lunch - despite looking very green due to the amount of green veg I had to use up yesterday, it was lovely! The stilton just came out a bit salty tasting.

Already thinking of dinner, will add in some salad from the veg box along with the potatoes and cold Quorn Roast.

    Hi All,

LipStick - the party went brilliantly actually. Thanks for asking. The kids who were going to be heading off to the other party ended up staying as they were having too much fun - yay! :D

Last night's M&S meal was amazing. All of it was lush!!

Tonight it is burgers in ciabatta bun with a few wedges and salad. Kids are having snack tea as it is our busy night for in and out.

Went to town and spent at B&M and Asda but not much on groceries. Managed to use nearly £6 coupons in Asda bringing my bill to £1.85 for loads of stuff so really chuffed! Treated us to a lovely new rug for in front of the fire from B&M - was on offer at £19.99 instead of £29.99 :).
    3 kids(DS1 6 Nov, DS2 8 Feb, DS3 24 Dec) a hubby and two cats - I love to save every penny I can!

What the salesman told you is a load of rubbish (what a surprise, eh?), and obviously a ploy to get you to buy an extended warranty. Freezers are one of the most reliable if not the most reliable of domestic appliances (salesman said "there's a lot than can go wrong with modern freezers" - no there isn't! Just think how few moving parts they have). I quote:
"Freezers have the longest lifespan of any home appliance, with most models having an expected lifecycle of twenty years for chest models and shorter for uprights, especially self-defrost models."

Try this for a guide on typical lifespans of domestic appliances (US-based but the basic data is the same)
    http://www.mrappliance.com/expert/life-guide/

Also worth bearing in mind is "Given that the average lifespan of a freezer is twenty-one years; your old freezer could be costing you more money in electricity than purchasing a newer, more energy efficient model."

You could try making your own crisps in the microwave, if you have a mandoline

  • Evening all.

I've come down with a cold, first time I've had one since I got made redundant in April, dunno whats happened there, had the remaining meatballs and made some pasta yesterday, didn't fancy much as I had a portion of chips for lunch, so i just chopped a bit of onion, added garlic, added water and some jerk sauce, reduced it down, turned on the George foreman and cooked some pancetta, the pasta already had corn and broccoli mixed in, added the pasta and pancetta to the jerk sauce, lovely meal there.

Still have jerk sauce left and have taken out 2 pork things in parmesan crust for dinner, will have with some mash potatoes.
