Ah well I went to Tesco's this morning hoping to get some markdowns. Needless to say, I circled and circled, waiting for the people I saw marking down to finish. I finally got frustrated since I had been there for awhile, and left. At least I know that I need to go a bit later next weekend!
I managed:
Cornflakes: 31p
Longlife Milk: 59p
3 bananas were 51p!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That's crazy!
Potatoes: 69p
Lettuce: 57p
Yorkshire Puds: 55p
Sponge Mix: 22p
Tomatoes: 75p
Soft Cheese: 50p
Sausages: 61p
2x noodles @ 11p each
Large bag of plain flour: 60p
Spaghetti: 39p
Garlic Baguette: 32p (for when BF comes)
Ginger nuts: 35p
2 cheese pizzas: 45p each (for when bf comes)
Wholemeal bread: 47p
Total: 8.55
I did try the Co Op and Sainsbury's, but neither had any reductions this morning yet. Grr, frustrating!
Today's food: cornflakes, banana
Lunch: Leftover beans and cornbread I made yesterday
Tea: maybe a pasta bake with soft cheese and leftover passata, maybe a sausage or two? Salad using leftover or newly purchased veg OR roasted sprouts
I *might* try my hand at a crumble since I have 3 apples that need to be used.
Hope everyone has a lovely day! It's sunny and clear, yet cold here.~Steph~0 -
^ expensive bananas! Most supermarkets have them at 68p/kg at the moment though one of them has just gone up to 69p/kg, can't remember which one, normally works out about 30p for 3 bananas. Waitrose tried to charge me 30p for 1 banana the other week, when I queried it he said if buying a single one (I presume from the sandwich counter??) then it's 30p per banana, I queried that and said they are marked at 68p/kg so that's what I should be charged.. was all a bit confusing as I'd never seen single bananas charged differently and on a Saturday in a busy store I did hold up the queue a bit but I hate being overcharged!!
I use Lakeland freezer bags, not cheap but usually can get 1 box free when buying 3/4 or something. I hate that frozen smell though food can get, especially veg when it's been frozen.0 -

Thank you for the advice!
For home made dishes which I freeze down I use foil or plastic containers with lids. When I've had to re-portion raw meat or fish I make sure it's not bloody and use aluminium foil.0 -
Out today:
Pack of YS mushrooms, last of YS cherry tomatoes, pack of ALDI filled pasta tortelini (sp?), last of bacon, 1x tinned tomatoes, second half of YS veggie pack and last satsumas.
Tomorrow I need to use up the last parsnips and carrots, so thinking we might have roast with some YS sausages0 -

These are my fave boxes, they fit perfect single portions of things like bolognaise and they stack really neatly even in my tiny freezer space. I had some from years ago then they stopped doing them and they reintroduced them again a year or so ago so I got a second set. Love them!

Evening all, been out most of the day as was treated to Sunday lunch out. Just snacked on cakes tonight!!
Popped into Sainsbury's and good news is they were reducing fresh turkey crowns ....................................... bad news, only reducing £30+ crowns by £3!!
More than likely they'll be reduced massively for their staff at the end of the working day - good luck if that's the case, but luckily they were looked after last year.
Only spent £1.48 on:
Basic prawns (tiny shrimps) @ 64p (from £2.50)
Meatball (hurray) @ 59p (from £2)
Anya potatoes @ 25p (from £1)
Nothing needed really until the end of the week and may save pennies. We are taking my Brother out on Tuesday for the Wetherspoons Grill Night (hubby finishes for Xmas/New Year on Monday - Jesus tomorrow!!). We'll also do a Groupon Italian during the week, so spends will be kept down and that £1200 is looking pretty doable Kirri.
Kirri - which veggie pates do you buy, if any??
miss_emmajane - I'm thinking of making roast veg soup - someone made it on tv during the week and it looked nice.
There's a programme on Friday night - The Hoarder Next Door Christmas Special
Someone apparently hoards:hundreds of tins of out-of-date food, with several freezers filled with the same;
Not one of you lot I hope.

Good news on the costs! I need to see if I can come in under a round number myself now..
I don't really get any, any more - Waitrose used to stock a variety of them in pots, can't remember the brand, maybe Cauldron but don't think they do them any more (they did various ones like mushroom, carrot and cheese etc). Don't see them in supermarkets now that I've noticed?
Oh just googled them, probably only get them from big health shops now http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/?ie=UTF8&keywords=vegetarian+pate&!!!!!googhydr-21&index=grocery&hvadid=12773930580&hvpos=1t1&hvexid=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=3325709021758561909&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=b&ref=pd_sl_b8sz6ua4j_b
Not sure about the cat food that appears in that list
I now just stick, for a spreadable type thing, to houmous - the M&S Moroccan one is amazing (contains honey but ok for veggie not vegan).0 -
Houmous is really easy to make if you have a food processor. For large batch I use a couple of tins of drained chick peas, couple of tablespoons of tahina, couple of peeled n minced cloves garlic, EV olive oil, juice of a lemon.
You whizz the chick peas and garlic, add olive oil while revolving slowly and if you think eek it's using all my olive oil, you can add a bit of water. You just blend it all to the consistency and taste you like.
Yes the proper way is to soak dried chick peas for 28 hrs in water with a bit of bicarbonate of soda and then boil for 4 hours but who has time ?
If you can get Al Wadi Al Akhdar or Cortas Lebanese tahina (tahini) from an ethnic shop go for it, otherwise the best tasting (and I've tasted loads) brand in supermarkets is Cypressa. Less than stellar tahina can be helped by adding a bit of sesame oil if you have it.
Of the ready-made ones I've tried (Waitrose, ASDA, Tesco, Sainsbury's) I'd say Sainsbury's does the best houmous. Some of the Tesco flavoured ones are just gloop0 -
