Morning all. Hope all are well. :)

Off to see Puss in Boots this morning with ds and mum then having a spot of dinner in town. Might have to bit the bullet and actually buy bread while in town.

May head to see a friend this evening as ds is sleeping at my folks. That'll mean drinking a large amount of alcohol but not sure I'm in the mood.

Lynsey - I wouldn't bother making that trip for the fish and chips since the peas aren't included. ;)
There's a storm coming, Mr Johnson. You and your friends better batten down the hatches, because when it hits, you're all gonna wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us.
  • Went to Sainsbugs yesterday. Stocked up for the first time in six months! Spent £115, that's pretty good I think. Another six months eating out of the freezer and cupboards! :)

hilstep2000 - you will still top up though won't you??

    Lip_Stick - sorry about your peas drama......robbing b*******. :D
When I pop over to the Metro Centre (BHS store), I normally have my breakfast in Ikea - could do both though if the offer continues.

Back from shop and £6.98 spent so far.

4 packs of bacon medallions, eggs and milk from Lidl.
Popped into Tesco express as sometimes they have reduced beer for hubby (70% and 75% off), but no luck - did buy 1 jar or Pataks Madras sauce for 44p in the "whoopsies".
Then popped into B&M on a detour and bought a packet of 140g Phileas Fogg crisps for 49p and 2 packets of Brannigans salted nuts for 10p each (very small packets). Got hubby 2 bottles of a Belgium beer at only 69p per bottle (grimbergen), probably should have got more.

Looks like it might snow here today, so may not get to Home Bargains and Coop.
Off to do my pork casserole.

  • Ah I wish I had a Lidl near me. Being a poor student I don't exactly have the means to have a car etc so I have to put up with where the buses go or where I can walk to :)

There is a big Tesco nearby but otherwise it is just local shops which are ridiculously expensive due to the "convenience". Got a few cheaper locally run stores nearby that I get cheaper things from though, and a Wilkos and BM in the town centre are good for dried things and bathroom/cleaning type things.

Had a few sorry looking cherry tomatoes dry fried with the last couple of slices of bacon from the freezer. Got some tinned butterbeans I am trying to find a decent recipe to use them with...any ideas?

Recently I have acquired rather a few breaded fish fillets :D so I'm guessing I'll have one of them tonight with some philly mash or something similar. Soup for lunch I imagine...always thrilling :D

Getting really bored of food stuffs now. Next week I think I'll be spending a fair bit of my budget (as in £5 haha) at the grocers to get some colour and taste into my diet :) some onions peppers etc.

Thanks for the link to the baking site Lynsey :) will have a good nosey at that. Got my free card from kukkle today for the boyfriend (we go together like bacon and eggs...very suitable seen as the skinny little thing LIVES off bacon) and will be mooching to the shops to get some chocolate to make brownies for him for his Valentines gift :)

We got takeaway last night, i spent 2 hrs deep cleaning the kitchen and didnt want to mess it up! So curry tonight, slow cooked stew tomorrow and various bits and bobs next week, aside from eggs and lunch meat i don't think i will need togo shopping again this week.

Will add my receipts for this week up later. waiting for british gas to call, she said she call by one, im desperate for a bath, but need to wait till after that.

Hopefully will get to do some baking today. Fancy making cookies :)

  • Littlewillow: Butterbeans! Theres a greek dish called 'Gigantes' basically 'big beans' which utilises butterbeans and is very tasty, also cheap! I make it in the slow cooker (start it off in a pan on the stove and then transfer) but it can be done in just a pan or in the oven too, it's very flexible and easy to adapt. If I want something more substantial I add potatoes or sliced chorizo and cook long and slow. It is one of those dishes that benefits with age, if I make it on a Monday night, we won't eat it until Wednesday, it's far better when the flavours have had time to steep.

Theres a basic recipe for it here:

But like I say it's very adaptable. I'd recommend adding a large handful of feta of mozarella about half an hour before you serve and either crisp the top in the oven or stir into the pot so it melts into the stew. Hope this helps.
  • Morning all. Another day of vile rainy weather here, not much to report. Eldest full of a cold, youngest taking a nap with his Dad so all is quiet and peaceful (unheard of for a Saturday!) Really trying to make a dent in the cupboards, made a pot of this soup last night:

    http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/333614/red-lentil-chickpea-and-chilli-soup

It is brilliant (an old favourite, I've been making for years) and fab for using up storecupboard ingredients, it tastes far more than the sum of it's parts iykwim. Still need to make a stew with some irish beef I have and i'll make a small batch of chicken noodle soup for the toddler as the above soup is way too hot for tiny mouths. Hoping for another NSD today, no plans as such, housework, hoping it will brighten up so we can go for a walk in the glen or down to the beach but it's not looking too promising! Hope you all have a good weekend, very jealous of those of you who have snow!

Brilliant :) I will definitely be trying this one out. It will be part of my Sunday cooking day :) loving the idea of adding cheese near the end :) yum yum.

This is the recipe for the brownies I'll be making: http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/1223/bestever-brownies
My only changes is a little less dark chocolate (by 25/30g) and making them in a very deep dish and cooking them for longer - usually just until it feels right (the wobble test always works for me) the wait is definitely worth it. I find by making them thicker, although they tend to take ages to cook, they are a lot more squidgey and have more delicious chewy bits :) Yummy I'm getting hungry thinking about them, good job I'll be sending most of them away :D
