Well that is what the consultant told me when we were in for someone with a paracetamol overdose.. I know who I'd be believing!
It also isn't the number it is the amount of paracetamol they contain.. eg. kapake/tylex has double the amount than the OTC ones.. plus 4 times the amount of codeine. My mother has them for migraines.. instead of 125mg they are 500mg plus 32mg codeine in tead of the 4 or 8 you get from the chemist. She is prescribed 8 of those a day.. as was I after surgery.
standard paracetamol is 500 mg per tablet, when you take 2 together you take 1g. Check the box in your cupboard if you don't believe me! The max dose for adults in 24 hours is 4g according to the BNF (British National Formulary) i.e. 8 tablets. Kapake and Tylex both contain 30mg codeine and 500 mg paracetamol. It is the dose of codeine that is high, not the paracetamol
I'm not saying she should take hundreds I am pointing out the chances of 10 instead of 8 causing issue are negligible when much higher doses are prescribed for various reasons and it was to reasure uropa she wasn't going to die.
Obviously there is always someone who has adverse reactions to any drug and paracetamol is actually quite addictive and easy to fall into the addiction which is why the OTC dose is so low. The docs work out the dose based on weight and age so they can give higher doses.. but 8 in a day will not kill a child unless they are allergic.
Paracetamol is not addictive at all. The dose of 4g in 24 hours for adults is the same whether you buy it in the corner shop or have it prescribed by the doctor. The dose for children is worked out by weight in hospital or by the GP in specific circumstances ie if a child is particularly small or has other co-morbidities. When you buy it over the counter for children the dose is worked out by age. You should never give adult paracetamol doses to a child under 12 as it would be a significant overdose. People are rarely allergic to paracetamol, the damage occurs because metabolites of the drug cause liver damage. The doses for children under 12 are due to change soon - more info here http://www.mhra.gov.uk/NewsCentre/Pressreleases/CON120251
uropa... the first problems you get with too many paracetamol is headache.. which is how people do accidentally OD on them.. they then take more for the headache the headache gets worse.. etc etc.. After that you start feeling sick/being sick as your body rids itself of the poison... so silly people then take more thinking they have vomitted up the nice medicine..
I'm sorry to seem like I'm labouring a point, but I think its very important to have correct information about medicines in the public domain. The OP did the right thing by ringing NHS Direct and later presenting at A&E rather than trusting what a random person is saying on t'internet!0 -

Bin is sparkly.
Weighing in on a topic I have missed most of...
paracetamol o/d is only around 20 standard tablets, it is unusual for the o/d to be so close to the correct dose for readily available drugs. And there is an optical isomer of paracetamol available that is non toxic, but drug companies won't produce it 'cos of ££££££££££££££.Please do not confuse me with other gratefulsforhelp. x0 -

Hi everyone! I've never done flylady before, but thought I'd start this week. Sadly(??) most of the bits on the list are things I did yesterday! But once I get home from work I'll do the other bits:
Thoroughly clean the fridge
Wash the windows if they need it
Scrub out the oven and hob
Will also give the living room a quick polish and tidy as my Brother is over tonight for tea, and I might even venture in and tidy the RoD a little. (Look at me, already using the thread lingo!)
It's lovely and sunny where I am though, will be very strong, grown up ect and not just chill out in the garden with OH and a sun lolly!

Oooh i hope i haven't caused any problems round ere!
Today has been pretty much a write off. My dad has been round to just kind of "be here" so i wasn't alone with the kids but this afternoon i have had them on my own. Thankfully Peppa Pig has done most of the babysitting for me and DS has slept a fair bit.
Basically i am still in a LOT of pain and just waiting for the next time i can take a tablet. The painkillers only seem to last an hour at maximum once they've kicked in. Thankfully i have an appointment at the dentist tomorrow afternoon to get my toofole looked at.
Anyone know how soon i should be feeling the benefit of the antibiotics? I did a gram last night to kick me off (doctors words! Ha ha!) and have taken two so far today.
I'm still going to end up taking more paracetamol in my 24 hours than i should be unless some kind of magical pain fairy comes and takes away my agony. My day has looked like this (if anyone is interested)
2am - 1 codeine
4.30am - 2 paracetamol & 2 ibuprofen
7am - 1 amoxycillin
9am - 2 paracetamol
10.45 - 2 ibuprofen
11.30 - 1 codeine
1pm - 1 amoxycillin
2pm - 2 paracetamol
and then if i can hold out til then...
4pm - 2 ibuprofen (this will be my max til 4.30am tomorrow)
6pm - 1 codeine
8pm - 2 paracetamol (max until 4.30am)
9pm - 1 amoxycillin
During the night 1 codeine when it gets bad.
Oooh, actually i think that works out okay. Just need to stick to it!

and is probably the reason why the rules of the forum state not to give medical advice
DS1 helped with the couple of bits I couldn't reach in the garden and we have been and got him new trainers so that is another job done.
