seems that your initial opening gambit of offering more is not only cutting your nose off to spite your face, but encouraging dodgey sellers to demand more than the agreed price.

ebay is best used when you have time, refine a search, save it, watch the market and wait for the right bargain, bid late (maybe one early low bid to encourage poitential sellers that there is a market for it) and bid the full amount you are willing to pay

This is surely one for ebay to sort out. The item has been sold to the OP. If it was a Rolls Royce and £1.20 was the winning bid it would be the same situation.

If Ebay does not take on this case and stand up for the bidder's rights, it cannot call itself an auction site.

I doubt if my offer has spread to the dodgy ebay sellers board, so how would it encourage them. how would they know?
The seller has made a mistake in listing foir this price. Collection only will have put most off. I could try to force him to sell, fail and go pay £40 for one, then trash his seller account. Or I could try to be a human being about it.
As for the last paragraph. Read that again then slap yourself.

EDIT: I also disagree with encouraging bad sellers or "mistakes" - you can learn from mistakes better if people aren't too indulgent with you. Forgiving, yes - if I thought the person was being honest I wouldn't leave a neg or raise an NPS against them. But offering more money just seems to be saying to that person "Oh, it doesn't matter if I do that again, I can just demand more and I only have to pay fees on the lowball bid but get what I think it's worth off the person concerned."

But each to their own, I guess.

so there is a regular market of these items for £40, and because (from what I'm inferring from your post) it's a collect item nobody went for it so you picked it up for £2?

I'm not trolling - your little seminar on ebay does and don'ts will stay in my memory as possibly the most pompous thing I've read on here.
And yes, around £30 with £10 postage is the norm, why is that hard to believe?
I read far too much from the "ebay police". All the self righteous posts about sellers, and buyers. It's turning in to the ebay Hitler youth.

Have Ebay scrapped their non-performing seller policy - thus letting sellers of the hook?

Tried leaving one tonight, and kept getting told only option was to talk to seller.

Seems odd you can be punished for no reason when a parcel takes 3 days to arrive via DSR's - but a seller who won't sell can only be punished via feedback and DSR's now too. They should get a strike.

Pretty sure the 3 strikes and your out for NPB's is gone too.

All part of Ebays master plan to keep Ebayer numbers up - even if it means letting off the bad ones.

How long ago did the item sell? I'm wondering whether there's a timescale & it hasn't been long enough or something equally as daft?
