My next plan is to change my real home number so that only friends and family have it, and give anybody else who might need my number the 0870 one. I'll probably allow all sorts of marketing people to contact me, unsubscribe from the telephone preference service and, as BexTech mentioned earlier, let them talk and talk.

I also have an 0871 and 0870 number directed to a VoIP number from Sipgate that goes direct to voicemail, I give this number to companies who have no real need to contact me, others like the bank have the 0870/0871 number that goes to my number that I can answer myself.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!
(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)
  • I'd never heard of Sipgate .... until now. A free phone number into the bargain, eh? Hmmmm ..... I might just get myself an 0871 number too!

Sipgate, one if not the first VoIP providers to enter the UK.

But you won't need to unsubscribe from the TPS, indeed you will be better staying on it. This is because calls to your number will now come in on your 0870 number, so your true 01/02 number is irrelevant.

  • Does it cost you to install a 0870 number on your line? Also, does this work off you 01/02 number (ie can you still ring this number to get thru) or is it effectively replaced by 0870?

Does it show up on your BT/whoever bill?

If you choose the right provider it costs nothing to own the 0870 number, and you can earn a small amount of revenue from them.

Your number isn't replaced, you current 01 / 02 number is not affected at all.

What happens is when someone calls your 0870 number that call is then invisible diverted to your 01 / 02 number.

Nothing will show up on your current providers bill, depending on company used you would get an email each month of the amount of money you have earned from people calling the 0870 number.

This is what the big (and small) companies do and why SayNoTo0870 is able to list the real number the 0870 lands on.

Which is the right provider? Does sipgate provide this for free it seemed from the website that for the free service people need to call you via a PC ?
I am planning to start up with a business but would like a business number that also doesn't cost potential customers the Earth to phone that I can re-root to home or even my mobile - provided for free if poss.
