Can I set up a premium rate phone number

Given the number of times creditors have been calling me recently, I've wondered if I could earn money from THEIR calls?
I've thought about setting up a premium rate number, and updating them with my new number!
What do you think? Would it be legal?
I had a letter from Lloyds demanding that I call them recently - on an 0870 number - and I got the impression that their call centre operative had been instructed to keep incoming calls going for as long as possible.
Wouldn't it be nice to turn the tables, and have them pay me when they call me for a debt they want me to pay?
Business is business, after all!!!

They could become difficult and say they do not call out 0906 numbers or something. But if it works, good idea.

You can have your own 0870 or 0871 number. Just google 0870. Perversely, when you visit the saynoto0870 website, you often get content related ads offering 0870 numbers!! The saynoto0870 forum is another place to look...

I've had my own 0870 and 0871 numbers for a few years now, simply to get back at companies who expect me to call them on such numbers. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)0

Thanks for that. How is it going? Do they call you, or do they refuse to? How much does it cost to set up?0

I've only had one company not accept the number.
It didn't cost me anything to set-up and there are no monthly fees, I get paid to receive the calls.
Don't earn a great deal, but that wasn't really point, though I've had my banks call me trying to offer me other services and I let them talk and talk and talk, and then say I'm not interested. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... Hehe - I like your style!
The money isn't my motivation either, its just nice to be able to turn the tables on them. The fact that I'll be earning from the call, and the (unwanted) caller is having to pay 7 pence+ per minute is excellent.
I've found an 0870 service provider, and providing they come back with the answers I'm hoping to hear from my questions, I'll be the proud owner of an 0870 number very soon!
Its a pity I can't make the call charge what I want - the temptation to give my bank a phone number that would cost them £50 per minute would be very difficult to resist0 -
I'm now the proud owner of an 0870 number. My first call came tonight from GE Money. 15 mins I kept them talking!!

anyone mind saying what the kinda of revenue you get?Yes Your Dukeiness0

Its not much. I think that I'll have earned about 7p from tonights call - but they'll have paid a lot more for that call - probably in the region of about £1.
It was always my intention to turn the tables a bit, rather than it be a money-spinner for me.
If I'd have gone for an 0871 number instead of 0870, I'd be earning a bit more, and they'd be paying a bit more, but as all of these financial institutions use the cheaper 0870, its only fair that I return the 'favour'.0
