You can get a Panasonic TZ10 from amazon for £180. They also do a 16gb transend memory card for £15 which is about 3000 photos.

You couldn't do much better than that in my opinion.

I bought a TZ10 to take on my holiday to Canada last month. I got it for £174 minus £30 cash back from Panasonic. I would suggest a spare battery and a soft case as essential accessories.

I am delighted with it's ease of use and the quality of the snaps and video.:T

This might sound stupid! but what I have found with compact cameras for me is the grip aspect. I find I never have total control/hold of the camera as much as I would like, there is always something in the way because of the size & I dont have big fingers neither.

That's where a bridge camera, like those mentioned, might come in to play. You get much more of the feel of a traditional SLR and you'll almost certainly get a viewfinder. Many are electronic, but they still work like a real TTL viewfinder in many respects and aren't affected by direct sunlight, like a lot of compact cameras with just an LCD panel are - and you don't need to hold them at arm's length if your eyesight isn't quite what it used to be!

Fuji's suffer with very poor battery life, a problem they have never managed to sort out.
Buying second hand gets you up the tree a long way the canon g7 and upwards are very nice cameras
Its not only Fujis that suffer poor battery life, ive got a Canon Ixus and a Panny TZ7---both are appalling for battery life.

My Fuji doesn't. The model I have takes AA batteries, so there's plenty of choice in which rechargeables to use. If you buy dirt cheap ones they may not last. I really do get hundreds of pictures from one charge. I won't claim 500, but 200 plus is easily achievable. Obviously it depends on how you use the camera. Don't suppose I'd get 200 if I used the built in flash for every shot for example.
I've just recently bought some Sanyo eneloop batteries as they are claimed not to lose charge while standing idle. That is a problem when you've got more than one set of batteries and you get so many shots out of one charge. If your spare set have been sitting there for 2 months waiting to be used, they could be flat even though they were fully charged 2 months ago. Too early to say yet, but hopefully the eneloops will overcome that issue.
Of course the other advantage with a camera that takes AA batteries is that you can always carry a set of standard AA batteries as a backup set.

My parents both had Fuji cameras and in both cases when on holiday the whole camera froze up and the lense stopped moving at all, so wouldnt focus etc. They both now use Canon point and shoot cameras (dont know model numbers) which take nice photos.

Before I moved into the DSLR world I always had Sony Cybershot cameras which were great and easy to use...

As a general rule always stay with a camera manufacturer like Olympus, Cannon, etc.. rather than an electronics manufacturer like Sony or Samsung etc.. as the lenses from the camera manufacturers will be far better quality.

I have an Olympus X-42, and my wife has an X-45, and they are brilliant cameras. Far easier than taking my Cannon SLR on holiday.
