  • I know you're a newbie Mitts, but please be nice to people on here. Sometimes it is not nice to find a bug in lettuce, and the mouldy biscuits might well have been badly stored.

Long time reader, first time poster as felt compelled to post here.

I'm a student and work part time in a supermarket and I know my supermarket only cover the cost of the price.
You wouldn't believe the amount of things that can go wrong with food, I've had customer's complain because they bought a pork pie and the egg was missing from the middle, or they opened some cheese/bread/yogurt and it was moudly.
Unfortunately these things do happen, alot. A tiny hole in the packaging will cause mould to appear and obviously we can't see these tiny holes! I can't count how many times I've noticed moudly cheese/ham/bacon whatever on a shelf and it's only gone like that because the packging has opened slighty or a tiny hole has appeared, obviously it get's taken right off the shelf if we notice this. We don't purposefully try to sell moudly things and obviously we don't put anything out that is clearly moudly.

I think a refund for the product is suffice in my opinion.
  • A few years ago i bought a lettuce which had a bug in it, took it back & they just gave me the money back. Then from the same store i bought some naan bread which when i took it out of the wrappings found it was very mouldy, even though it was still in date. Took it back & they weren't very helpful or apologetic & just refunded the money. I also found a white hair in a sandwich, took the half eaten sandwich back & they just gave me back the money for the sandwich.

I emailed a complaint to CS as i wasn't happy all it all & its disgusting having a bug in my lettuce, mouldy naan bread & a hair in a sandwich. All i got back was a standard we're sorry email but these things happen.... really!!!

I think the success and global domination of Tesco have really gone over their heads. Tesco now think they are so big and powerful they don't have time or the care in the world for the like of us..'the customers'.. Tesco kind of know that however much we complain or are dissatisfy with their products, we will still shop in the store.

We got caught out last year buying stuff to put away for Christmas and didn't notice the short shelf life.... just ended up eating them early, but being more careful this time around!!
  • Some time ago , I bought some cheese that was out of date , realised after I had paid and was packing my bags . CS were very dis-interested and told me to leave my shopping and go and get another one????
Recently I bought some cheese (i like cheese ) and when I opened the packet to use it , I found it had mould all over one end. The packet was well inside the sell by date , but was coloured plastic so no-one would have seen it was mouldy without opening it first. I emailed the manufacturer giving all the barcode and other markings from the packet . They were very quick to send me a nice letter of apology and £8 in cheese vouchers .
I generally do not bother taking products back to Tesco anymore but Waitrose .......ahhh now there is another story......

Depending exactly what sort of cheese you purchased, it is quite possible that the mould should have been there, especially if as you describe it was on ONLY 1 side of 6 (assuming it was a rectangular block)
I had a piece of cheese only yesterday from a large wedge of a French something that my brother-in-law had bought for his birthday and just a single end had some mould on it - actually sort of a crust - it was perfectly edible and very nice indeed.

    I agree.

And what do you think trading standards will do?? Do you expect Tesco to be able to see inside every packet, or check every single pack on every single shelf. I think you will find that they will say a refund/replacement is more than adequate. If it was a branded product then it is the supplier who is legally responsible for it as it was still in code!!!!!

Errm actually they have a legal responsibility to check every single pack, on every single shelf, to ensure that it is fit for purpose.

and as for your second point, the seller is legally responsible not the supplier, you have bought it off the shop, not the manufacturer, and again, it is up to the shop to ensure it is safe etc, before they sell it on to the consumer.
