My puppy has Pyometra....

No, she wasn't drinking a lot and she had eaten and was not vomiting so this is why the vet said she would be OK til morning. The vet we actually saw was the one that did the op and she said it had been caught early. I did read you could get stump pyo so am hoping she is not succeptable to this condition.
Fingers crossed our insurance covers us - we have been over and over the exclusions and the vet said there is no way this could have been prevented as they would not have spayed this early - but it doesn't really matter to be honest. Vets bill all come with part of having puppies. I found someone who accepted Amex so I could get my bonus FF miles from Virgin though! Small consolations!!
She is sleeping in her cage at the moment, had a wee and a poo when she got home. The worst thing is going to be trying to keep our big staff x away from her for a couple of weeks! Wish me luck. I think I am going to be sleeping on the sofa for a couple of nights though, just to make sure she is OK.0 -
Delighted to hear all is going well, you must be relieved.

Glad shes sorted and on the mend now. I got my springer from her breeder becuase she also managed to get pyo as a puppy - it was almost missed becuase they didnt think she was old enough for it - but luckily for me, I ended up with a wonderful dog

Awe love her, My b itch had that just under 5 years ago, we were having her done the week after anyway, just brought it forward, like yours she wasn't vomiting etc, was an awful time.
I.E the crate, we have put a padlock on ours to stop kids getting puppy out middle of the night/early in morning.
Wish her well.....0 -
Pyo's can be either open or closed, and are VERY rare in young dogs - as has been noted, usual symptoms are fever, drinking lots, lethargy, off food +/- vaginal discharge, and a usual history of just having finished a season a couple of weeks ago.
Open pyo's are less dangerous, and given your pups age and what you say about her eating ok, not drinking lots etc, I am sure the on call vet made the decision he thought best.
Also I am led to believe that stump pyos occur only when ovarian tissue is left behind after spaying, as it the hormones produced by the ovaries that cause the problem. This again is very rare, so I wouldn't worry about it.
The important thing is that you spotted the problem, got her to the vets and she is now on the mend
Give her a gentle hug from me xxx
PS - If the insurance won't pay out, ask the vet to write them a letter - often does the trick
I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

Thanks for the message of love
She thinks she is back to normal now, kids were eating their dinner and she was crying for some. I went to take her outside and she tried to run off with a bone (she is on the lead) and then I turned my back and she lept up onto the sofa. Now she is back in the crate.
When I collected her the vets said she was very sweet and 'a bit of a character'.
I;ve not issue with the vets BTW, it was caught in time and the vet did ask me all of the questions. He also said it was very rare. She is fine now and that is the main thing.
Thanks for letting me know about the letter, that is a brilliant idea, thanks.0 -

My first dog had closed pyo at age 5 and had the emergency op. My insurance company said they wouldn't pay as they classed it as a spey, but my vet contacted them and said it was a life-or-death situation and they paid up.
Trying to exclude it by saying it is a preventable condition is ludicrous, a puppy should never be neutered before their first season so how could they be excluded?"Cheap", "Fast", "Right" -- pick two.0 -
I;ve called Insurance this morning, they asked what it was and I said Pyo and they said 'no problem, form will be out tonight'. Which was a huge relief to be honest. Uusually they ask info about when it was first discovered but this time there was none of that, just getting the form to me.
I guess that they can say that it is preventable by having them speyed when they are younger. I've just been telling everyone I know now to get their b itches cpayed if they have not had them done.
I am sorry you lost your dog to it Vicky, there should be more information given about this condition when you register a female puppy at the vets, so that owners understand the risks if they do not having it done. I had never heard of it before the weekend.0 -

This is a commonly held myth and there is absolutely no truth to it. A female puppy can and should be spayed around 6mths old, preferably before her first season.“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0
