My puppy has Pyometra....

At dinner time yesterday evening my 8 month old pup was not herself and when we fed her we noticed pus dripping from her lady bits so called the vets. She was not vomiting and was ill, she was grumpy but they said she was probably hormonal so he said bring her in tomorrow morning.

Turns out it is Pyrometra, the vet put a finger in and it came out covered in pus and she said that it did not look good. She was giving a scan and they said it was so bad, when they scanned her the clumping made it like she was pregnant.

They told me to check with the insurance company whether she was covered but I said it did not matter whether she was or was not, it had to be done. It is costing a whopping £800.

Have since gone through the exclusions and it looks like she is covered though so one less thing to worry about.

My other dog is missing her badly and she will definately not be home tonight.

Poor baby.

Aww - I hope she is OK!
I'm sure she will feel much better after her surgery

I'm so glad you managed to catch it in time and hope she makes a full recovery.

A message to others reading - this is why it is vital to have your b1tch neutered if not being used for planned breeding, to prevent this potentially fatal infection.

Thank you, she is recovering well but was unsettled in the night. They kept her on the drip and I am watching the clock to go collect her at lunchtime.

Our other dog is going stir-crazy!!

My other dog can actually unlock the puppy crate (Yes, BOTH latches!!) and let the puppy out (took a few weeks to figure out why I had not locked the door....!!) so I have got her crate ready in the lounge and have a lead so the clip can be used as a lock.

I too want to urge anyone who does not want to use their dog for breeding to get their dog spayed as soon as they can because your dog can die from this. Our vet said it was very rare for this to happen to pup after her first season and is usually seen in older unspayed bit ches so please, please do not risk it for the sake of saving money on spaying. Pyo is sometimes not covered under pet insurances because there is preventative measures that can be done to stop it occuring so please note this. It has just cost us £800.

I am amazed that given the symptom of pus, you were told it could wait. Pyo is an emergency.
Hope she makes a speedy recovery.
Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.

You're right, I missed that! The pup should have been taken in immediately!!! I wonder who gave you the advice to wait until the following day, a receptionist, nurse or vet?

It was the emergency vet that said to wait til the morning to take her in and gave us an appointment for 10.40 so it was not even first thing, he said that there was a condition that produced pus but as she was a puppy it was probably unlikely it was that.

    It was!!

Just going to get her in a few minutes. Killing time now.

That could be a good argument for a reduced bill?

Must admit it's fairly unusual, although certainly not impossible, for such a young pup to have a pyo. Was she also drinking lots of water? These symptoms in an unspayed b1tch should ring immediate alarm bells with any vet or nurse, no matter how old the dog is and is definitely a medical emergency.

My goodness she is very young for that condition.

Hope she is soon fit and well.
