Is it unwise to buy a one bedroom house?

    I'd never have a lodger.

If friends or relatives want to come and stay, they can either sleep in the sofa bed, or I can recommend a lovely hotel that's not too far away.

I wouldn't want to work from home, but if I did a desk etc would fit in the lounge.

Anything I needed extra space for, eg a hobby, I could use the garage. I am not allowed to drive at the moment and in any case have no car, so don't need anywhere to put a car.

I hate babies, they whine and cry and are smelly and dirty and expensive. If I want something to look after I'll get a hamster or something, not a baby.

Any new partner would have to either have a proper job or lots of savings, so we would be able to afford to move.

All my furniture would easily fit. I'm currently renting a one bed house, the new house has sightly bigger rooms.

I assume there is a market for one bed homes around here, there are lots of newly built flats including one bed ones.

I'm female not male btw, Humphrey isn't really my name, I don't think anyone would be that cruel to a child...

The 'garden' would possibly fit a rotary clothesline. If it was a small rotary clothesline. But at least it would be somewhere to put the wheelybins!

I'll wait and see what the survey says I think.

Never say never. I'd hate having a lodger but if I was ever out of work then I'm sure someone paying me £100 a week would be quite useful - as long as they never left their room ;)

I live alone and my last two houses have been two bedroomed. I couldn't imagine going back to a one bed.

    £100 a week's a lot though. More than JSA.
What if it's for £70/week? You'd no longer be on JSA - which isn't a problem, except it's a "passport" benefit to get other freebies that are valuable, like reduced prices in some places and free training and lots of freebies.

It sounds like you've really thought it through and the house would be ideal for you. I don't think you'd have any regrets on that front.

The problem is likely to come when you want to sell, because you'd have to find someone exactly like you :) The majority of people have at least one of: partners, babies, pets, hobbies, working from home, houseguests, junk that needs to be stored... So you'd be taking much more of a risk than when buying a house that more of the population could comfortably live in.

It basically comes down to whether or not that's a risk you want to take, balanced against the (probably hefty) amount of money you would save by not going for a larger property.
