I find a little persuasion is a helpful thing. A chat with a senior officer, pointing out relevant legislation and why you feel it is a criminal matter, often helps.
I think that was my point. Why should you need to point out to the police what the relevant legislation is. Or perhaps I'm naive in assuming that the police will know whether something's criminal or not! If you have to persuade them to act, then it suggests they're reluctant to in the first place. Lots of people will take what the police say at face-value (and why not?!). So if the copper says 'sorry, love, it's a civil matter' then chances are you'll leave it at that.
Other people's experiences suggest that the police's first response is sometimes to fob you off. You yourself have suggested that, to get any further, you need to be persuasive or talk to a senior officer. Why? Does BT do a reverse phone book thing ? In the states you can type a number into something like the pink pages and it will come up with an address and name. I am not sure if it works over here but could be worth a look.
Shame the police wouldn't help but living where I do I am not suprized really, I am never sure what it is they do do.
As I understand it, reverse number to address look up is not possible in this country. I have found the item advertised elsewhere on sites and have had it removed by the webhost so hopefully this scam nipped in the bud, but guess he will try something else somewhere.
Just to add though, the police do seem to be taking it seriously in that they haver taken details, copies of emails etc. Not sure how much effort they'll apply though. Problem seems to be that it is my local force that have to deal with it rather than the seller's who may have local knowledge that could track him down. Seems that they do not have the systems in place to share information though. (Not sure what's wrong with a telephone!)0
