I have known "tradesmen" operate 2 or 3 companies.
Which one you get the bill from depends on which is the furthest below the VAT threshold at the time0 -
The only way to administer the VAT thing is to force all sole traders to be VAT registered.
Many tradesmen/soletraders who operate correctly have turnovers well below the VAT limit. My brother is a plumbing and heating engineer and he's nowhere near the VAT limit.
To say all tradesmen who are not VAT registered are on the fiddle is simply untrue.
It's probably more the case that those who ARE VAT registered are the ones fiddling.[SIZE=-1]To equate judgement and wisdom with occupation is at best . . . insulting.

VAT registered companies are more likely to fiddle than those not Vat registered?
Can you please give some verified data on this, or have you just made this up, because you know someone who claims they are a gas fitter?Nothing is foolproof, as fools are so ingenious!

I for one will do nothing to help a system when it lets huge corporations avoid taxes by incorporating in another jurisdiction. If you want to do business in the UK then you pay taxes here.
If Vodafone doesn't want its network to go offline permanently overnight, it can pony up the missing billions.
Taxes around 20% are acceptable but at 40/50% with NI on top they are too high.
As for companies and VAT, quite reasonable to have more than one company (and VAT threshold) if you need to. You need to be careful on how they are set up though.
At the moment I need some work done on the house. I will get some quotes and if all are equally competent, then the guy with the lowest quote wins. He is likely to be non VAT registered or I can do a cash in hand job.0 -
Good luck to them. With all the c0ck-ups over the last few years, it's doubtful if many of us believe they have either the time or the ability to do more than scratch the surface.
I notice now I'm living in a very rural environment that many people depend on a certain level of cash in hand or payment in kind arrangements. These aren't cowboys, or they wouldn't get any work, just people who have always rubbed-along in this way. They're neither conspicuous consumers, nor lazy.
The guy who pays me in logs and meat hasn't much of a paper trail, anyroad. I've burned and eaten most of the evidence! :rotfl:0 -

If I understand you post correctly, you seem to have a real problem with huge corporations doing what they can to avoid paying tax. And your reaction to this is to behave in the same way and knowingly use companies or individuals that do what they can to avoid paying tax. Isn't this slightly hypocritical?0 -
Ive been registered for VAT for about 6 years now and not so long ago I was asked by a client if "I can do anything about the vat?" I said unfortunately I can't and after completing the work and getting to know the client he told me he was a tax inspector.
Now hand on heart I honestly believe he just wanted to save some money and nothing to do with entrapment. We are all human and want to save money if we can and I'm no different. That said I would rather be honest and sleep well at night than have an extra few quid in the bank/under the pillow in the dogs basket..
For a sole trader the biggest problem with vat is that its assessed over a rolling 12 months and not over your financial year. For the last 3-4 years I haven't reached the vat threshold but given that the materials for a job may range from £200 - £5,000 its too risky to de- register..
Contrary to popular belief being self employed is far from simple, easy and full of tax perks........0
