With regards to ebay, if the item sells for less than you bought it for that should mean it can be used to offset CGT elsewhere.

Not to mention the expense that you will need to offset if you are a regular off the sofa seller..

New printer, new camera for the pics, new laptop, broadband, mobile phone, storage costs, HL&P - sitting all day watching the bids come in is awful cold it's the winter, especially in you lounge.....

A family member has some untaxed income rest is PAYE. The first time we simply wrote them a letter saying earned additional x here is the cheque for y.

Not good enough, full tax return reqd. Completed. Demand received for y. For the subsequent years short form completed and demands received for y.

No issue in paying the money but it must cost as much to process, and answer the odd query in writing posed to them, than they collect.

I am sure the invetigation teams will have to provide cost/income justification and there are just too many as a PP said.

I wonder how much data e-bay provide to them?

My tax office recently "provided me with an opportunity to put my affairs in order" in the form of sending me a self assessment form.

As you probably know, all the figures need to be insert in 'whole pounds'. But now I have had a response where they have chosen to re-calculate using £.pp which has determined that I owe them a whole 90 pence. I have been told to do nothing until they have investigated which method of repayment they wish to offer me, and to stand-by awaiting instructions.

:rotfl: Reminds me of the time I had a letter saying my student loan had been overpaid by 30p and that I needed to repay it. I'm sure printing off and posting the letter cost more than 30p! I ignored it and they never bothered asking again, thankfully!

Pinching at pennies whilst the greedy corporations get away with Billions of pounds of tax fraud, all legal.
Shut these loopholes first, then pick on the puppets.

    I sometimes referee on a Saturday. I get paid £30 and a meal. I don't declare it. Should I?
Can we just take it as read I didn't mean to offend you?

    I won't tell if you don't.

Depends if you award a penalty against an Inspector.

As for the local tradesmen, though, HMRC have made it nice and easy haven't they? 20% VAT, and 20% Income tax. So a 'proper' quote of, say, £10K to do up the roof should be charged £12K and the builder keeps £8K. Nice and simple now. £10K in crisp £20's, and Vatman can go sing for his supper. Roofer is £2K better off. Everyone's a winner!
    Everyone isn't a winner.
The roofer who plays by the rules and has included VAT within his quote has lost out, as the cowboy has undercut him.

To avoid any "incriminating" paperwork trail, the householder commissioning the work has lost out, as the roofer is unlikely to have had any type of structural survey carried out before work is commenced, unlikely to inform building control of any notifiable work and certainly unlikely to issue a reciept proving they have carried out the work, thereby leaving the householder in a dubious legal position should something go wrong.

As a tradesman who regularly has to sort out the damage and carnage caused by "cash in hand" alleged "tradesman", I find the advice being given out by Loughton Monkey is legally dodgy at one end of the scale, and possibly fatal at the other extreme.
Nothing is foolproof, as fools are so ingenious! :D

I know of a few people who are on benefits and are pretty heavy ebay sellers, who pay no tax - nor do they disclose their income. I hope this puts an end to this.

Are you really happy living in a state that doesnt allow a few duck and dives?

Good luck to anyone getting away with a bit.

I don't understand why they don't get the corporations to pay their bills - didn't they let off Vodafone from paying £6million or something of that amount?

It only makes sense when you realise that it's easier to punish people you don't know than those business men who make 'contributions' to your party. It's a special kind of caste system..and it's always been around.
