I don't understand why they don't get the corporations to pay their bills - didn't they let off Vodafone from paying £6million or something of that amount?
It only makes sense when you realise that it's easier to punish people you don't know than those business men who make 'contributions' to your party. It's a special kind of caste system..and it's always been around.
They don't let companies off paying tax, but the system is set up such that it is an incentive to keep income from international markets out of the UK. Trying to clamp down on this is futile as companies just move abroad, best to incentivise them staying here and offering jobs by using competitive tax.0 -
I must be one of the few people pro this...if it happens. (and is cost effective to implement). I can't see how they can get true cash traders, and I think they are bigger than estimated.0

I support it. Tax dodging like this is rife in Greece and look what is happening to them.lostinrates wrote: »I must be one of the few people pro this...if it happens. (and is cost effective to implement). I can't see how they can get true cash traders, and I think they are bigger than estimated.0 -

I think it happens on a much larger scale than estimated too.
A friend of mine did tutoring a couple of months ago and earnt about a grand in a month. He has a proper job through which he pays tax on the standard PAYE thingy thing, so he owes HMRC about £200. But there's no record of the tutoring, no receipts. I don't know if he banked the money - not the sharpest knife in the drawer so probably did, but you get my point.
He's just one guy, and ok it's 'only' £200, but scale that up and it gets expensive.
There's no reason not to go after these people, but I just don't see how it can be done.“I could see that, if not actually disgruntled, he was far from being gruntled.” - P.G. Wodehouse0 -

I see it on a far bigger scale too. People's sole/main incomes not there £200 here and there ones. Often, because its cash and they trade in cash they are, on paper, very poorly off and entitled to benefits. which is a double whammy of ''unfair'' because they are able to take from a pool there for those who need it AND evade putting into the pool for those who need it!0 -

Quite. I know that it's common practice for family-run businesses in Greece to have three sets of accounts: one for the tax-man, another for the family and the third is the real one kept under lock and key.
Plus, corruption is rife and widely known in some parts, especially the islands. If you haven't got a cousin or distant relly in the police, local planning or the judiciary you're scuppered. There are also protection rackets allegedly run by the Russians in all sorts of places. You can tell by the security stickers on the windows of shops.0 -
