This is how an arms-race starts.0 -
Another piece of unnecessary and badly thought-out piece of legislation from Brussels. But as I keep saying, they have to keep themselves busy somehow.
Bad news for (motor)cyclists who will show up less. And far from helping with those people who don't put their lights on in bad weather, I suspect it will mean more people forget to put on their main lights at night time, because they'll assume they are already adequately illuminated with the DLRs.0 -
Then people should have their eyes tested more frequently.
You would be breaking the law if you don't. However usually it is down to concentration rather than eyesight. And the biggest offender is mobile phones. When all cars will have DRLs people will be oblivious to them!
This will also make motorcyclists less conspicuous and they are already shouting about it.
Both the above would only apply in very busy traffic. In lighter traffic where people tend to concentrate less, then any vehicle with lights on would stand out more.
As a motorcyclist you need to assume that car drivers are blind, and ride accordingly.0 -
How did it ever become a law??
To me it is complete stupidity to use lights during daytime!
They are ok in Scandinavian countries as they have short days during winter but why in whole of Europe??
Because we have too many f**king morons driving about at night, in snow, in fog, in rain with NO lights on! OR at best they have the damn parking lights on, which are about as effective as a candle in a jam jar!!“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

In 2006 the Department issued a report on daylight running lights. It saidA Department for Transport (DfT) commissioned study of the Commission's research confirmed that there would be a net reduction in accidents from compulsory fitting of DRL but cast doubt as to whether the benefits would outweigh the costs.
This UK report did however conclude that dedicated Daytime Running Lights could be designed to improve the visibility of cars in dim light without reducing the conspicuity of motorcyclists. It said that the use of dedicated, low intensity DRLs would be of benefit without having a negative effect on motorcycle visibility.
Unfortunately the low intensity bit about the lights just got lost, the manufacturers are fitting high intensity units , from Feb all new cars had to have them and you can't switch them off. (actually there is a way to switch them off on the Golf but if I told you they would probably wipe my post.)You scullion! You rampallian! You fustilarian! I’ll tickle your catastrophe (Henry IV part 2)0 -
DRLs were the reason I finally gave up motorbiking. I felt that the bike was becoming even more invisible. It seems ironic that DRLs make cars safer, but bikes more dangerous, given that bikers are 30-odd times more likely to die each year.0

It's because it's been proven that some colours make cars difficult to spot, even in strong sunlight. As far as I'm concerned, if running lights give me a chance to react even a split second faster then they're worth having and they'll save lives.0
