Daytime Running Lights = stupidity?
How did it ever become a law??
To me it is complete stupidity to use lights during daytime!
They are ok in Scandinavian countries as they have short days during winter but why in whole of Europe??

I suppose because numerous bits of research has shown that car with running lights are easier for other car drivers & pedestrians to spot than cars without running lights?0

It's all about visibility.
Plus it'll put a stop to the mongs who think it's fine to drive with no lights on in heavy rain or thick fog.0 -
They have become quite common of late. It does seem a bit unnecessary to me if I'm honest.:cool:0

Exactly, it's quite obvious really. If the OP tries looking in their rear view mirror on a motorway, in overcast weather, then they will realise that the easiest cars to spot are those with runnung lights.
Too many accidents happen because people simply don't see the other vehicle. So anything that makes them more visible is obviously a good thing.0 -
My old Volvo S40 had these and it drove me mad, they also eat bulbs like it's going out of fashion.
You could switch them off by going to sidelights but then there was no warning buzzer to say sidelights left on and it then ran the battery down...mad things"We want the finest wines available to humanity, we want them here, and we want them now!"0 -
They're a bad idea IMO as the average driver gets used to all the cars being lit up, they're going to be less likely to notice cyclists and pedestrians.
There was a US state tried compulsory DRLs, they found it made no difference to vehicle accidents only that Volvos (which have DRLs already) were more likely to be involved in accidents than they were previously. I don't think there were any stats for accidents involving pedestrians though0 -
All these replies are all dandy but im a road user of 4 wheels not 2
if i was a 2 wheel user i would be concerned that once all cars have these overbright care in the community lights on i would not be as visible0 -

Then people should have their eyes tested more frequently.
When all cars will have DRLs people will be oblivious to them!
This will also make motorcyclists less conspicuous and they are already shouting about it.Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.0 -
Get your own "over-bright" lights for your bike! Sorted.0
