Asda- Worse shopping experience ever!

OK before I start my rant a bit of background - I am by no means a supermarket snob and often shop in the large stores for convenience although if M&S food were nearer they would get a lot more of my custom, anyways here goes:

I called into the local asda last week to purchase some basic things like toilet roll, milk, bread, eggs etc etc. Anyway i also purchased 2 pies from the deli counter, not asda own brand but fresh pies none the less (this was at around 8pm in the evening).
I got the pies home and before putting them in the oven discovered that they were infact passed their use by date (they finished at 11am that morning). I thought to myself that this was not right and i would take them back the next day.

I went back to asda the next day and tried to exchange my pies for ones that were in data to be told
"It doesn't matter about use by dates, asda are getting rid of all use by dates on all packaging from the summer"
I was not happy with this response and said I still wanted to change my pies (i still had receipt).
My request was declined and I was asked to leave the store as i was disturbing other customers.
I left and thought nothing more of it

Fast forward to yesterday
I went into the store to buy some bleach as some much needed cleaning was due, I picked up the bottle of bleach and went to pay, I was self serving and as i tipped the bottle to scan it the bleach poured out everywhere, all over me and my shoes, bag etc etc. Again i went to customer services to be told
"Its your fault for not checking the lid"
I showed the bottle to the woman and lo and behold the lid was on tight however there was a split along the side of the bottle.
"There's nothing we can do" was her response and again i was asked to leave the store.

Asda will never get my custom again and they can roll back up their own A**es!

Rant over

Unbelievable! Did you speak to the manager?

You should have contacted trading standards about the pies.

If you have kept the receipts for items damaged by the bleach send Asda copies and a bill. If they don't pay up, take them to the small claims court.

I did ask to speak to the manager but was told the manager is unavailiable on both occasions, that being said the store I went to is a complete shambles at the best of times with shelf stacking trolleys left everywhere and products priced wrongly.

I'm not going to bother with trading standards for the sake of £1.99 pies, I will take my money and vote with my feet. Although my bag and shoes were drenched in bleach there doesn't appear to be any staining so not going to make a claim. I just think that a large company should treat its customers better.

Umm - was that 'sell-by date' not, in fact, a label indicating when the pies were baked/packed? This would seem a lot more likely in a deli context.

I was thinking the same as Porlock, especially as it had a specific time (11am) which use/sell by dates don't normally have.

Even if this is correct, which seem possible, it should have been explained properly by CS.

Absolutely. If you didn't go back to the deli counter but just to customer service, they might not be all that familiar with procedures. Whatever the case was, it was shoddy service, but at least you do still have two edible pies!

I think this is rubbish. You're still in the shop, you haven't bought the goods yet, and as such, I believe Asda has a duty of care to keep its shoppers safe whilst on their premises. That includes not pouring bleach all over them. I'd certainly pursue this further - if you've had to ditch your shoes etc. they should pay for a new pair.

Something similar happened to my mother. She got paint on her coat in Lloyds (they were decorating and didn't have very visible wet paint signs). She wrote a letter of complaint - they were only too happy to refund her the cost of a new coat.

Your Asda experience is not uncommon. But mine's still one of my favourites - the fire alarm went off once, it's a large store with a mezzanine level and they wouldn't let people use the fire exits. Said they were locked and herded everyone down one tiny escalator instead. It took so long, had it been a real fire (it wasn't) we'd have all burnt to death! But locking your fire exits - that's shocking! :eek:r

There was this one guy in a wheelchair stuck on the mezzanine floor. He couldn't use the escalator (obv) and lifts don't work when the fire alarm's going off. There were all these Asda employees standing round him, looking puzzled going 'um, ooh, er, you'll have to stay here, love. Let's hope it's not a real fire'. Unbelievable!

Did you get in touch with you local fire brigade and report this?

Had that been me I would have used reasonable force to remove anyone who tried to stop me and attempted to open the fire exit myself and kicked up a major stink about it had they been unopenable.

I did once open a fire exit in a shop during a fire alarm but no one tried to stop me and it wasn't locked so no problems.
