MERGED: Meters - New / Repairs

  • I don't know if these are still available to buy outright, but you don't say if these are for your own use or for tennants. Either way, gas and electricity prepayment meters are available from both gas and electricity boards, but are no longer using actual cash. They now have a key with a chip or a smart card, which you charge up at paypoints in places like the Post Office or some Iceland shops. I know, I have both as I have always hated bills!

You can buy reconditioned ones from Toolstation and I think Screwfix. People still use them in holiday cottages etc.
  • On Jan.6th a new gas meter was fitted. I have just rec'd my current bill which shows the units used have almost quadrupled. They say this is because
the new meters' spin faster' but when the units are converted to KWhrs this
    is taken into account.

Has anyone else come across this?

    this is sort of true

old meters are known as "imperial"
when billing u - the units used are almost trebled to convert them into m3

new "metric" meters dont need this conversion, they already measure in m3

so on a metric meter it will look as though you have used almost 3 times as many units

shouldnt make any difference to the cost of your bills tho...

When calculating the kWh don't multiply the with the old (x2.83) imperial to metric conversion factor ;)

    Hi Guys,
not strictly relevant to this forum....

Our external Gas meter has a broken door - the wind took it off

Any idea who would or should be responsible for fixing it?

Is it myself, and if so who could I call?
    Is it my supplier?
    Is it Transco?

    Thanks in advance

    Dan

Transco, now rebadged National Grid Gas, are not responisble for the maintenance of meterboxes/enclosures. You need to contact your gas supplier. They may well arrange repair via one of their agents or pass the job to National Grid gas but either way,you may have to pay. NGG as your gas transporter are only responsible for the gas distribution network upto and including your emergency control valve.

The easiest solution might be to buy the bits and fix it yourself. Go here
http://www.mitrascomposites.co.uk/ and identify the bits/order on line.

Cheers - I don't want a meter box door, but they happen to stock something else I've been looking for. :D

Sorry to resurrect this thread but I have received a letter from Siemens c/o British Gas, my current electricity supplier which says that

"Under the terms of the Electricity Act(What's that all about???) all meters have to be exchanged after they have been in use for a set period of time"

I bought the house new 9 years ago so its hardly an old meter, just interested to hear if anyone else has had such a letter of ever heard of the Electricity Act!!

    Thanks very much

Is legit, not sure of the exact times but meters are only certified for a set period of time AFAIK.
 I have a poll / discussion on Economy 7 / 10 off-peak usage (as a % or total) and ways to improve it but I'm not allowed to link to it so have a look on the gas/elec forum if you would like to vote or discuss.

This is fine, they'll just come and swap the meter for a new one.
Should only take about 20 mins, but someone needs to be there in case of sensitive elctrical equipment & surges etc.
