As you are finding, Homeplugs are not the panacea many claim them to be. Personally I would find a better way of connecting your broadband.

I don't know what the alternative is though... it's too late to do physical wiring, and the wireless signal won't reach, albeit it only being around 25 metres away...

While there may be problems, it looks like the linked site is scaremongering [homeplugs 'threaten national security'] on behalf of a threatened interest group [CB radio?].

It is not central to why the OP's homeplugs are no longer working as the used to.

You have changed/posted too many variables to come to a meaningful conclusion.
    May I suggest that:
    1) You start with a clean socket test with your PC wired direct to the router via ethernet. Make a note of the speeds
    2) Now plug the faceplate back in on the master socket and repeat the test with your PC wired direct to the router via ethernet. Make a note of the speeds
    3) Now try wireless with the PC close enough to get a strong signal
    4) Post the speeds

Is your router plugged (via a filter) into the master phone socket or an extension phone socket?
This should help to eliminate possible internal wiring problems.

I haven't done a speed test with the mac plugged into the router no, but just presumed that that would give it a perfect speed... I don't know if this helps in narrowing down the problem at all though:

I noticed the speed on the mac dramatically increase in the middle of the day around 229kbps all the way to closer to 7000 mbps, this still wasn't the same as the computer connected directly to the router which got results of around 11,000 mbps. I thought my problem had just fixed itself... but now the speed has dropped back down to 161 kbps. I thought this could be down to limiting speeds at peak times, but I did a speed test on the computer connected directly to the router and although that also showed a drop, it was a drop of around 2000 kbps, from 11,000 to 9000, which is still good in my opinion, enough to watch iPlayer etc.

This really is frustrating me, because the Homeplugs used to work fine and I don't know what the issue is at all....

There is your answer, it sounds very much like BT traffic shaping. They only limit certain IP's/Sites. So for example, I get a 3meg 'speedtest' result at 6pm. but torrent downloads are limited to <150kbps at the same time.

It's not that because a speed test may give me 3MB when connected directly to the router by ethernet, but by homeplug it could only bee 15kb/s!
