Since switching to BT, Homeplug doesn't work as well...

Hi there,

I used to be on O2 broadband and used a Netgear Homeplug to access broadband in a part of my house where the wireless doesn't reach, but managed to pretty much get the same speeds of up to 20MB that I got on the computer connected directly to the router, on the homeplug.

But since switching over to BT, the speed has completely dropped down on the Homeplug; a speed test on the computer connected directly to the router gives me 11760 Kbps right now, but on the one connected to the homeplug only 229 Kbps...

Does any one know what I can do about this or how this problem may have been caused? The speed is so bad on the Homeplug computer that its unbearable to use the internet!

Thanks!

Try resetting teh homeplugs and doing whatever you need to do to 'refresh' it (Not a homeplug user - forgive me)
Try using the BBand without - The new Homehub is meant to be one of teh best/most powerful wireless senders out there, way better than routers just a year or 2 old.
I can see where my neighbours have had new hubs, as weak signals are stronger and more signals are being picked up from the area.

Yet another reason why Ethernet cables are far superior to homeplugs. :)

I don't think there is a way of resetting the h homeplugs, they work automatically... The thing is I don't understand why it would change with BT to be honest! In actual fact when we had O2 the homeplug and line was actually on the ground floor whereas I was trying to connect via a homeplug on the 2nd floor and still got the same speeds. Now with BT the line is on the 1st floor, and much closer, and the speeds have dropped significantly.

Unfortunately, the wireless doesn't reach that far which is surprising because it's only around 20 metres away... occasionally I can get one bar of signal, but it drops out quite quickly. I have the Homehub 2.0 and it's not that great!

So you have not only changed from O2 to BT, but from having the Homeplug on the ground floor to the first floor? If so, I think the change of location/mains socket is likely to be much more significant than the change of provider.

Yes that is correct; but surely the wiring is closer now so that would be beneficial if anything?

Also, does anyone know how far the wireless range of my Homehub 2.0 should be? Because as it stands it doesn't go very far...

Have you measured the two connection speeds in parralel? Don't you think that it could be BT's internet speed. In other words: "nothing works as well with BT"!

Yep the speed tests are done within minutes of each other! I don't get why the wireless is so bad, my Mac has a wireless N card and it's really not that far. It works better with the Homeplug, even with that it's slow but at least it's usable for basic browsing.

Not necessarily. The socket you are now using may be on a different ring main which have more noise on it, may have a lengthier route back to the distribution box or the wiring to the socket may not be in such good condition as the previously used socket.

Try another PC plugged into the homeplug, maybe its an issue with the PC you are plugging into the homeplug. It could be the MTU settings on your PC that dont work very well with your new BB provider. It was the MTU settings that caused my problem:

I am now using an iMac, which I've never used with my homeplug before... but I don't have a spare PC to test unfortunately? Is there anything I can play around on settings to test if it is the imac causing it?
