I haven't done a speed test with the mac plugged into the router no, but just presumed that that would give it a perfect speed... I don't know if this helps in narrowing down the problem at all though:

I noticed the speed on the mac dramatically increase in the middle of the day around 229kbps all the way to closer to 7000 mbps, this still wasn't the same as the computer connected directly to the router which got results of around 11,000 mbps. I thought my problem had just fixed itself... but now the speed has dropped back down to 161 kbps. I thought this could be down to limiting speeds at peak times, but I did a speed test on the computer connected directly to the router and although that also showed a drop, it was a drop of around 2000 kbps, from 11,000 to 9000, which is still good in my opinion, enough to watch iPlayer etc.

This really is frustrating me, because the Homeplugs used to work fine and I don't know what the issue is at all....

Is any mains powered equiment being used in the house when the performance drops - CH boiler, washing machine, dishwasher for example?

Nope nothing like that at all! And both homeplugs are connecting straight to the mains, not extensions.

As a general rule, if you change more than 1 thing at once, and performance goes down you cannot get to the bottom of it unless you go back to the way you were and change just 1 thing.

Leave the mac out of it , it is not giving helpful information, it is just adding to confusion!

Put the homeplugs back where they were and you will see the difference arising from switching to BT. Now put the homeplugs where you want them and you will see the difference attributable to moving the homeplugs.

Unfortunately I can't put the homeplug back where it originally was because our builders removed the old line so BT had to install a new one, which is why it's now on the first floor!

I've just tested the homeplug on a Windows laptop and the results aren't consistent on that either they keep changing a lot!

Wait, you had builders? This is all pretty pertinent knowledge that you are leaving out. Originally you made it sound as if the only change you had was "we just switched ISPs now the Homeplugs aren't as good"...!

In reality your post should be something like, "we had significant work done on our house +/- electrics and now our homeplugs aren't working as well".

Sorry I didn't realise that was important... do you have any advice on what can be done to resolve the problem? I don't mind calling an electrician in if it will actually fix the issue!

As you are finding, Homeplugs are not the panacea many claim them to be. Personally I would find a better way of connecting your broadband.
