I have got my first smartphone today - a Samsung Galaxy S2 :j I'm loving it so far, and have downloaded a couple of free apps, the fishing game and my horoscope.
I have also turned on wifi, and the 3gs icon has been replaced with the same wifi icon as on my computer. Am I right in thinking then when I am connected to the internet using wifi, I won't be using any of my 500MB of data a month? Will it automatically always connect to wifi unless I switch it off or leave the house?
I am concerned about it checking for emails and facebook updates - do I leave it connected to the internet all the time? is there a way to just check for updates when I want it to? I am at home most of the time so don't need the email or facebook on my phone all the time.
Thanks, and sorry for the newb questions

Yes when you are at home it will connect to your wifi now you have it set up. Whenever it does this you are not using your data allocation. Facebook updates and email won't use much data anyway.
Go to the market and install 'Net Counter' - this allows you to keep an eye on your data usage. You can also set an alarm so you know if you are getting close to your 500MB.0 -
That's correct.digitalphase wrote: »..Am I right in thinking then when I am connected to the internet using wifi, I won't be using any of my 500MB of data a month?
Generally yes, but I wouldn't rely on this and would keep my eye on it. Sometimes it may fail to reconnect to wifi after losing the connection.Will it automatically always connect to wifi unless I switch it off or leave the house?
Just switch the mobile data connection off then. Switch it on only when you really need it.I am concerned about it checking for emails and facebook updates - do I leave it connected to the internet all the time? is there a way to just check for updates when I want it to?I am at home most of the time so don't need the email or facebook on my phone all the time.0 -

You can go through options and set how often the phone syncs for updates on various apps, facebook etc0

Thanks for the replies

I downloaded quick settings - where is the bit about mobile data? GPS receiver is set to off and wifi is set to on. Is that right?0 -
GPS = Global Positioning System
It is normally off anyway unless you use google maps or directions. GPS uses only battery power, not data.0 -
Sorry i meant was that what you meant by mobile data being off, as i cant see any other settings it could relate to0

Quick Settings use customize at bottom and drag Mobile Data APN up the screen to the top .

Think about it for one second. How on earth could wifi affect your data limit?!!?!?0
