Had to make that awful decision today

Thank you all for your kind word and thoughts, it does mean a lot to me. Also thanks to Yorkiepud, that was a lovely post, thank you for taking the time.
Its been over 24 hours now since me best friend in the world fell asleep and I knew it would be hard, but the pain is quite unbelievable at the moment. I had Charlie for 9 years and not once did we spend the night apart, if I went on holiday, my dog's come to. I took them both camping often and we had so many happy times together. I'm so glad I always took photo's and recorded films, I will cherish these forever.
I've always had dogs, but Charlie was a one of a kind! I love all my animals, but Charlie has a special place in my heart. He was so in tune with me, he felt my moods and liked nothing more than sitting on my lap - he thought he was a little lap dog, not a big heavy boxer!
I miss my old grey friend so much right now, I just can't accept that I'll never see him again.

Big hugs from me, nothing I can say will help but know that Charlie is still with you and always will be.
I know what you mean about the "one of a kind" - we often have several pets in our lives, but there's just always "the one".

So. so sorry for your loss, was in yr position last Aug with my lovely girl, Nell - it was the 1st time we had a dog PTS thru ill health & we stayed with her until the end, I was so shocked at the speed of the procedure & the fact her eyes were just staring ahead. I too was inconsolable & my DH rang our vet the next day to enquire about her & what would happen in between her being PTS & her cremation. He assured us that he shut her eyes when we left & also cleaned her up as she was incontinent at that stage & we were washing her everyday. Her cremation certificate showed that she was only 'stored' a day before being cremated, its funny but I didn't know where she was & she hated shut doors, the things you think of in grief! - I was still getting upset months down the line but not as often as time went on, the day after I sat & howled, like you, for 2 hours solid in my eldest sons arms. I have on the bookshelf a little corner thats Nells, her Urn, my Springer model & my 2 fav pis of her framed - I still talk to her everyday. It took me 8 months to get to the point of considering another dog, & in April we took on another rescue, this time an Irish Setter, he's lovely but seems to gravitate more towards my husband, he's just not Nelly - it will get better but you still will have a few dark days, & days it catches you unawares. I still miss her every single day & she has a special place in my heart that no other dog will replace. Right, I'm going for a good cry now!0

Hey, i'm so sorry you had to make that decision. I did same thing with my 14 year old cat a few days ago. It was right thing to do for her, she had had enough too like Charlie :-( The rawness i thought had passed, but today i have been in floods of tears again. I do know that she is better now, and the wee rainbow bridge poem posted on your thread is a comfort to us all that have said our goodbyes.
Stay strong, and allow yourself the tears as they will help heal you. RIP Charlie until you're together again kx0
