Sorry to hear that. RIP Charlie.
Public appearances now involve clothing. Sorry, it's part of my bail conditions.

Ohhhh Jannine. Can't begin to say how very sorry I am. Don't think for a second you made the wrong decision. You loved him enough not to let him suffer and that's the greatest sacrifice you can make for him.

You let him go gently instead of, perhaps, in agony in the middle of the night unable to alert you. You gave him a wonderful life and a peaceful death - that's all any of us want for ourselves really, isn't it?

    Sending you a big hug.

I am so sorry for your loss, you did the right thing by him in the end he couldn't of asked for anything more.

Oh I am so sorry for your terrible loss ... it never gets any easier no matter how many times I go through it, so my thoughts are with you tonight as you come to terms with your friend not being around.

It really sounds as though he was ready though ... I had a Yorkie who suffered with fits and although it was controlled for some years with medication it came to the same point where he went into a fit that he didn't come out of ... it's not the time or the place to go into it all but suffice to say I know how dreadful it is ...

As you say though, for some time you were able to control the fits with medication so you gave him precious time and he was loved and happy.

I know things became worse far sooner than you would ever wish (and I know part of that is the shock of it happening so quickly), but you did the best for your friend. You got him to the vet and you helped him. You showed your love for him by doing the kindest thing possible for him at that stage of his fitting.

There truly is nothing else that can be done when it gets to that stage ... and your little dog obviously would have started to be getting confused and perhaps agitated so you gave him peace and dignity and helped him. It is the last act of love we can do for them.

I know a lot of people say they feel unable to stay with their pets right to the end, so God bless you for doing so. Having worked as a vet nurse I have seen some pets get very very upset and distressed when their owners have left them ... and I am not judging owners who feel unable to stay with them ... but I know it makes a big difference to the pets when they can go peacefully in their owner's arms, hearing that loving voice ...

Now you need to be kind to yourself ... you need to give yourself time to grieve for your loss, for your friend and to allow yourself time to come to terms with this. A pet is not merely an animal, they are a wonderful and loving part of any family so take your time, take each day as it comes ... it's never easy coming to terms with things, but you have another dog who will be missing him just as much as you, so I know you'll help each other cope ...

If you have any of Charlie's blankets that have his scent on them, I would leave them down for your other dog when you go back to work .. just so he has that familiar scent around. It may just reassure him and make him feel a bit more relaxed for as long as he needs that extra comfort.

You take care of yourself, love ... the next few days are going to be so hard ... and there will be times when you can't even begin to wonder how you will cope ... but in time, you will be able to look back and remember the smiles and the fun you had together.

Until then, just take each day as it comes ... if you feel happier to move his things away, then do that ... if you find it comforts you more to leave things be for now, then do that ... we all find our own ways to come through this (and if you saw the amount of leads I have hung up by my front door ... !! All belonging to the dogs I have lost ... I just can't bear to put them away and now I can catch sight of them and it makes me smile to see them there!) ... what helps one person may not help another, so just do what feels right for you ...

We do come through this dreadful time ... we never forget, but we find a way through until we get to a point in the future when we can look back and remember that precious friend who left pawprints on our heart.

Sending a big hug ... keep your chin up .. xxx

I welled up reading this, and I'm not really that emotional. This reminds me of a dog that my Aunt had who basically ended up having the exact same problems as your beloved pet did, with the same heartbreaking consequence.

Take care, and grieve as much as you need to, there is literally no point in holding it back.

    What a lovely post Yorkiepud
  • I had to have my 12 year old Boxer put to sleep almost seven years ago now. It was the worst thing I had ever done, as he was my best friend. I cried at the vets and I cried when I mentioned him for several days afterwards. You just need to remember that you gave your dog the best life you could. I knew straight away I wanted another Boxer, Diesel is 5 now and is snoring away on his bed next to my chair. It does get better, but does take time.
  • Thinking of you, you did the bravest thing though letting Charlie go when he needed to x
