Now it's my turn to be stumped by the aba-i petrol visit! I have emailed the below to the email address given on the answerphone for weekend queries, but I don't trust that it'll be read today. (Names changed when posting here of course!)

    Hello,
I am currently undertaking a visit for Brand X which involves visiting a Brand X station and a competitor station. I have just arrived at the second station to find it is also a Brand X station.
There is some confusion as the briefing notes emailed to me actually calls the competitor station 'Brand X Anytown'. No big deal, I thought, they have simply put them the wrong way round, so I purchased fuel at this station, then visited the next one (named first in the email) to find it is also Brand X - I assumed it was the competitor as it was a Brand Z station last time I was in the area! What should I do? Shall I purchase petrol here too?

Posting here to see if some kind person can help me out! I think I should buy petrol at this second station, but now I am worried I will not be paid at all because I purchased petrol from the supposed 'competitor' station when it was the same brand! As the rules state that fuel must not be purchased at the competitor station.

I've decided to go and buy the fuel at this second station, if need be, ill simply return to the first station later and redo it (towards the end of the timeframe so I am unlikely to see the same staff members!)

It happens quite often that both petrol stations are Brand X. The first one listed is the main one that you are assessing, and the second one is the rival. You can't buy petrol at the rival (even if it is still Brand X). You need to get petrol at the first one listed. Sounds like you may have to go back to the one you've already done and buy a packet of chewing gum!!!

One of mine had both brands as the main and competitor. Think you will have to revisit the first one and just buy something small like a bag of crisps as you are not supposed to buy petrol at the "Competitor".

Thanks proshopper and DevilsAdvocate1, I thought that might be the case. Oh well, lesson learned for next time! It's not too bad, I live quite close to the first station and it's not as though I won't make use of the fuel I bought! Or the chocolate bar! :)

2 hours. That's how long I've spent doing a grassroots report this morning. It really is taking a few minutes between each answer. Very tiresome indeed.

Ouch, that's not good. I've done a visit for them this morning - I think it can wait till later for input then.

Where I live all the petrol stations are Brand X but I guess they are all rivals for my business so are seen as competitors.

I am still plodding along with my first tax return and have been looking on the first page for help.
I am currently working out my profit and loss. Am I right with a couple of things: My income is the amount paid from the company you worked for (fee and the reimb). For expenses, anything I had to pay out i.e my purchase for the particular product? Also, I have completed a restaurant visit and this was a reimbursement to a max of £XX only job, so effectively when I minus off mileage it will be a loss? Is this the right way to record it or not? Any help would be grately appreciated, many thanks

Grey area about whether you can always deduct your purchase, especially with reimbursement only food jobs, as it can be argued that the food was not purchased wholly and exclusively for the purposes of the job.
Has been discussed heaps of times, have a search and you will find some interesting and helpful discussion on it :)
