Sorry so many of you are having a hard time of it - it's too hot for us pregnant ladies isn't it? Had my GTT this morning and get the results tomorrow. The surgery was so hot and I had a numb bum after 2 hours :rotfl:

I don't know about maternity leave really so can't help with that.

Keelykat congrats on team blue! You will love having 2 boys - my two have great fun together x

I know my work have told me I have to take any leave before maternity, as it can't be carried over.

On the subject of SMP, does it get paid instantly with your paycheck, or is it a wait? My work's online system shows my annual leave, and working hours, but is left blank for the time I'm on maternity (I think as I'm the first pregnant one they have, they have no job code for maternity). My maternity starts in Nov, and in Dec pay there should be 1 week of maternity pay if it's instant.... (I'm prob confusing myself, I know with other benefit pay there's a wait of a few weeks then it's backpaid, like JSA, child benefit etc)....

I'm being cautious in case I don't actually get my maternity pay in December's payslip.... :)

If I'm off for another 3 days I will drop down to ssp :( so will then be looking at being £700 a month worse off :( if I start my maternity I would get 12 weeks at 100% of my salary then the remaining 29 weeks at smp. So probably a big difference....

Also, does anyone know what should happen with my holidays? I have 8 or 9 days left for 2011 (up to December 2011). Should I definitely take these before I go off as work don't seem to be able to give me a definitive answer...

Re: holidays - I think that will depend on your work. They will probably insist you take any leave before you start maternity leave, but if you are signed off sick you might be able to get them to agree to pay you for your remaining leave days IYSWIM?

It really doesn't sound like you're anywhere near fit to work so I guess you need to do whatever makes most financial sense to your situation. I think Twinkle is right too that they can automatically start your maternity leave due to sickness. Is there anyone in your HR department that you could chat to about it all?

    MancBird,

With regards to A/L there is some info on what a company has to do on the direct.gov website in the Mat leave section. My company guidelines strongly recommend you take it before you go, or if you take short m/l and come back in the same leave year, you can take on return. However if you your m/l goes into a new leave year they dont like you taking it when you get back, but usually let you take it at the end of your m/l before you return- so you effectively return from m/l early, but then take the rest of the leave off, to take you to when your m/l would have ended. IYSWIM.

Financially i am playing my leave to minimise the £ cost of the m/l as i'm paying £900pcm of evil ex's debts still, and cant afford to go off on m/l before beanie arrives. I've saved up my leave entitlement+ 1 week carried from last year, so i'm planning on taking 4 weeks off in December before i'm due, then saving the rest of the leave up, + 5 days of the new leave year we will be in, and using that to take me up to 6 months off. That way i'll start getting proper money back in in June, rather than waiting till end of July to be paid.

Could you take your 8 days off as fully paid holiday, instead of starting your M/l, and instead of continuing sick? It should up your pay packet a bit, and postpone having to use the valuable 90% for 6 weeks any earlier than needed?

Thanks everyone for your help xxx

I am trying to get hold of hr now. Looking at my work emails they are actually in the office where I work now (they are usually based in another office) and wanted to arrange a meeting with me to see how I was getting on. I have tried ringing their mobiles but no answer :(

If I can take the holidays beforehand that would be much much better for me as that would mean my last day in work would be in 3 weeks time so would only be bringing my maternity leave forward by 3 and a bit weeks.

Keelykat, I really feel for you with the heartburn :( xxx I'm getting a lot of it now and it's horrid :(

Mancbird, I would speak to your boss and HR and say to avoid further inconvenience to them and to respect your own health and well being as well as your baby's you request to make an amendment to your original notification of maternity leave.
"I wish to to take annual leave owed from 4th august to 15th august (assuming you work mon-fri and have 8 days owed). I then wish to begin my maternity leave on the 16th august."
Your Ordinary Maternity leave will then finish on the 13th February 2012, and if you choose to take the full entitlement of Additional Maternity Leave, it will finish on the 12st August 2012.

Keelykat, have you tried eating melon for the heartburn? I read it in a magazine and found it really does help.

Lirin, where I work your SMP gets paid in the same way your wages would be paid, we get paid for working 1st-31st of the month on the 25th so our maternity pay comes through the same if that makes sense. I think if you're being paid it by your employer it should come through the same as your wages rather than like benefits.
For me my maternity pay is worked out based on my last 3 months earnings so it would be better for me to go onto maternity leave earlier rather than loose more money. Hope this helps and you get sorted, and by loosing the stress of work you start to feel better.

Kira, I'm not sure, it looks like a winkie but it could something else - we had a similar blob on our scan and the sonographer assured us it wasn't winkie.

Twinkle, Nice work on the pram :0) £100 off is great!!
