Stratford is really easy to get to by train from Birmingham. I have done it and think there was a train late enough to catch an evening Shakespeare play, although that might not be what you would want to do. It would make a good day trip though, saving money on somewhere to stay. Another option would be Shrewsbury, another pretty town or Kidderminister to see the railway?

I think the festival idea best if you can anyway figure it out. If you think about food and drink and maybe take some with you, you should be able to keep costs low, although I appreciate carrying stuff makes it harder.

Have a look on flightchecker for a cheap flight somewhere interesting. The London idea sounds good, a travelodge for a sunday night wouldn't bee too bad, maybe the sunday and monday?

To go to the festival at Knebworth you could go via www.megabus.com and can currently find fares to get from Birmingham to London Victoria on the Friday via coach for £7 each and on the Monday you can get the Virgin train from London Euston to Birmingham for £1 each. You can get a coach from London Victoria to Stevenage for £12 return fare each details of fares and timetables here.

Apparently you can get a free shuttle service from the station according to the offical website from Stevenage train station to the festival Knebworth. Although travelling will obviously take longer than orginally planned with your friend driving, it would only cost £14 each for your return travel.

The cheap ones from Tesco are fine, mine lasted for Leeds Fest two years on a run, and then Download last year as well. Just don't get the pop up ones, they're really bad, get the old traditional put the poles in yourself job! We took loads of pot noodles/super noodles for meals, loads of sausages to make butties in the morning, loads of cereal bars, crisps, fruit, ribena cartons etc.
    See you there!
