Don't really see how sanding would help that would just take me back to the render which would also need sealed with PVA otherwise it would suck the moisture out the new skim coat as well?

Not trying to arguee about the limitations of PVA just wondering what the alternative is before palstering and it doesn't seem like there is one?

I am pretty sure the problem with tiling is if you PVA ontop of the new plaster rather than pva then skim?

There are alternatives out there, namely Thistle bond-it or Wickes plasterbonding agent. I'm currently using Wickes plaster bonding agent, and have been very happy with it.

It's designed to provide a good mechanical key, but also assists with high suction backgrounds.

I've used it to re-skim walls which were a mixture of old skim coat with wallpaper paste attached, areas of fresh plaster from patching work, and sections covered with high gloss paint. It's provided an excellent rock solid bond with all those surfaces.

Exactly what I was about to ask,
    PVA with sand in it?

If wickes sell it, it will be a proprietory manf product, ;)

How come a painting thread has transmogrified into a plastering thread?

    Cheers

Aw c'mon you know better than that. The OPs question was related to not using a sealer on his new plaster before painting. He said, in passing, that he had read a lot of debat about PVA vs thin emulsion. That question was dealt with.

The use of PVA before plastering isn't relevant to this thread which has been well and truly hijacked.

    Cheers

Sorry it was partly my fault think the cross over came when the discussion started along the lines of how the paint will simply peal off with the PVA which turned into the new skim will peal off with the PVA which turned into me panicing and fuling the flames! :p

Technically, but it's not drifted that far off the mark, the issue of sealing plaster with pva was brought up in the 1st post and I for 1 have expanded on the risks involved in it's misuse.
Sorry you didn't find it helpfull but I hope someone did, and as far as highjacking goes, this ones like looking down a telescopic sight compared to some of the scattergun spreads we get;);)

    Nothing to apologuise for Dave

Don't use PVA to seal your walls and don't throw it in your threads. It is trouble all round.
