There wont be until you come to re-paint, then you will be crying for your mum lol, as the when you roll the existing paint will come off in strips.0 -
For once Missg I have to completely disagree with you. Its not rubbish advice - thats far too genteel. Its totally utterly barking mad.
Quite and it doesn't matter how many times you say it people will still peddle this nonsense.
Cheers

Yes it will be and you only had to give it 2 coats, but what people are trying to get accross is thast the problems come later.
Like the 1sy time the wall gets wet or steamy, you try to wipe or scrub off marks, the kids stick stickers on it and when you come to redecorate.
I to have to reiterate, it will peel of in a sheet.
It was years untill I believed it too
Oh, I find the very low tack 24hr masking tape best for the odd occaisions when I use it.;);)I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

I never knew the advice to make your masking tape unsticky by sticking it to your trousers first. Thankfully, I was having a break before I went back to do the cutting in and read this. I tried it (I used my carpet because I had no trousers on). It worked a treat and now I have a quick and easy way of making sure my edges are neat. Thanks very much for the tip.
No need to buy low tack masking tape again (especially as it doesn't work because it's too sticky).

Please do not use PVA!
I did this and had to put five coats of paint on. Even then, the finish was uneven.

Don't know what's going on with the pva statements here ..
I say don't use it on new plaster as a sealer...but would like to know all the other negative stuff as regards using it with skiming and plastering and mortaring
just watered down matt emulsion should do .........followed a coulple of days later with vinyl silk.you need the vinyl silk on top ..this drys too a very hard surface ..so in future the wall paper is easy to scrape off ..and the scrapper doesnt dig in
i know, if you're skim coating plaster on old walls ..you want to get rid of all traces of wall paper paste first ..this may take several washes to get it all off...when the walls dont feel tacky to touch when semi dry ..you're done.
this wall paper paste is your weak link......what ever is on the wall... .plaster.. paint ..artex or pva....the bond is only as strong as the weakest layer.
all the best.markj0 -

For year now when plasterers are re skimming old finished plaster they precoat the walls in a weak pva solution. They all do this as it makes their job easier, it ensures the plaster sticks as both the pva dries and the plaster cures at the same rate.
Unfortunately pva is reactivated by water so here are 2 real issues.
Tilers know to their cost the effect of applying wet adhesive and heavy tiles over newly or old skimmed surfaces. The pva melts and you can have a very dangerous situation:eek:.
Also if the householder papers and eventually strips skimmed walls where pva has been used, and the chances are they will never know untill it happens, the use of a steam wallpaper stripper will again reactivate the pva and the skim will "blow" from the wall.
Repair time again:AI like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
