Sold a faulty car from dealership
Thank you for reading this post.
Today I bought a vauxhall corsa 1.2 (54 Plate) from a dealership and its developed a really loud rattling noise.
I test drove it on friday and it sounded perfect. It went for its MOT on sat and I was to collect it today.
I signed all the paperwork and drove it home, as I drove for about 3 or 4 miles i noticed a loud rattling noise coming from the engine when its idle. I decided to take it back for them to have a look as it sounds like its a diesel now. They said that its normal for a corsa to sound like that and it will come and go.
I drove home but as i got home the noise was louder than before, I felt this wasnt right so popped into my local kwikfit. He said that the noise sounds like the timing chain is faulty and could possibly be on its way out. I should take it back to the garage.
I went back to the garage and they said that there mechanics say its safe and there is nothing wrong with it. I understand it may be safe and it does get me from A to B but its embarrasing having that noise coming from it. It never done it during the test. I'd expect better from a big name dealership. Eventually after alot of debate they said they can do nothing for me and wont take the car back or have a look at it (unless I buy a warrenty).
Where can I go from here? Have I bought a duff car that I now will have to fix 2 hours after signing the paperwork?
Any advice welcome,
Thanks

No. Under the SOGA, the vehicle should be fit for the purpose, as descibed and of satisfactory quality. SOGA states that any defect which occurs within the first 6 months would be assumed to be present at the point of sale. No warranty can replace this.
As for the car, VX's have a notorious rep for cam shaft failures in certain models. Personally I think I would move quickly on this and nip to your local VX dealer and let them have a listen and get their opinion. Have you checked the oil level?PLEASE NOTEMy advice should be used as guidance only. You should always obtain face to face professional advice before taking any action.0 -
I have a 30day warrenty but they say engine noise isnt covered, "it still go's"
You may well have a 30 day warranty but that does not replace your statatoury rights under the SOGA.PLEASE NOTEMy advice should be used as guidance only. You should always obtain face to face professional advice before taking any action.0 -
first of all I would get a proper garages opinion
It could be as simple as a loose timing belt cover
If the selling garage isnt playing ball then a decent idea of the fault is a good footing to start
If they say its fine then it will help if you can say well X gargae states X is wrong
however I wouldnt pay out for any in depth investigative work, just get a garage to have a quick look/listen over it
does the noise change with engine revs?0 -
The higher the revs the less noticeable it is. I called the head office to file a complaint and just had a call from the manager and he says that it's a car from the 'runabout' section and those cars aren't perfect. He then asked me what I would like to do. I said i'd like it fixed or i want to reject the car. Vauxhall wouldnt look at it without me paying a fee so plan to take it to a local garage for a second opinion. Thanks for your help so far, just about to look up soga0

they all make that noise the 1.o litre engine does indeed sound like a diesel once warm
i looked at a very tidy 1.2 today and that sounded like a diesel too once warm
it works it goes back and forth, dont see the issue really to be honest seeing as these cars are horrible little things
cant see what soga has to do with it or a warranty unless engine blows up
its a chain cam engine by the way0 -

are you real ????
were talking about a 3 day old "new car to the buyer " sounding like a bag of rocks being shaken and you say it's ok ? so what if they are horrible little things in your eyes
would you say the same if you bought a second hand washing machine which knocked it's brains out on a gentle or fast spin ??
No you'd take back it just as I would0 -

What planet are you from???????Went shoplifting at the Disneystore today.
Got a huge Buzz out of it.0 -
Someone I know had a 1.0l corsa, the 3 cylinder one. Deffo does not make a rattling noise. A wierd noise yes, but nothing that resembles a rattle.
I'd get the car rejected if it is timing chain or camshaft. I bet the previous owner never checked the oil.0
