Hi all, I have had a similar experience with Royal mail, I wonder if anyone can help. I posted over £500 worth of gold to scrap gold uk and it has gone missing, Royal mail are making it difficult for me to claim.

They want the original receipt of posting which I have but am reluctant to post in case they say they have lost that too then I have nothing. Also they want evidence of what my gold was worth, im not sure how they expect me to do that as I don’t have it anymore???
I think there are several problems here.

Firstly no one is going to pay out 500 pounds without proof of value.

Secondly you say that the gold was worth over 500 but the claim is for 500 as that is the limit on the service you used. Sometimes with insurance the claim will be rejected completely in situations like this on the basis that you had not paid a sufficient premium to cover the goods.

I suspect RM also look very closely at claims that are right on the limit for the compensation.

All you can do it to try to get as much written evidence as you can from the gold company to try to show what you were sending. I'm sorry to say that I wouldn't be surprised if RM don't pay out at all.

It's just like any other insurance really, no company will pay you out on the basis of a claim that you have lost something valuable- all of them will expect you to show some proof of ownership or value.

  • Well thanks for your comments, I will ensure they pay out and ill let you know when they do. Im suprised so many people are on RM side as they lost the item.

I really don't think any of us are on the side of RM, have you seen our other threads whinging about losses or lack of signatures on recorded etc?

However we would be doing you no favours at all to just say 'it will be fine' when it obviously isn't. When people post we assume they want help, not just sympathy- and we have tried to help. If this was straigh tinsurance (and I appreciate it isn't) then it might be wroth finding photos or other such proof that this gold has been worn/used by family members- but RM do require more than proof of ownership they require a value in order to pay out.
