Problem with new ram

I've been trying to increase the ram on my Dell Dimension 3000 from 1 x PC2700 256mb ram to 2 x PC3200 512mb but my computer won't load with the new ram installed and I get blue screen errors.
It works with each ram stick individually so each stick is ok.
When both inserted I get a message 'new memory installed' and the memory has been changed to 1024mb and dual but windows still won't load so it looks like both slots work ok on motherboard.
I've downloaded latest BIOS settings from Dell.
Both sticks came packaged seperately but have the same batch no. etc so should be good match.
I disabled Kaspersky and got further on before getting the blue screen.
Any idea what I could try next?
PS Most of the above is like another language to me!!!

Have you tried running with a single 512MB stick in either slot (and use both sticks, one at a time, just to ensure that both slots are definitely OK and that each stick is OK)?0

I've tried each 512mb stick individually in one slot but not in the other slot. I just tried the slot nearest the processor.
I thought since it recognised I had 1024mb installed when both sticks were installed together this must mean both slots were ok?0 -
If you're getting blue screen errors then you might have a faulty. What happened when you tried them on their own?0

They both work on their own0 -
When you tested them individually did you use slots or the same one?0

I used the same slot.0 -
sounds like a dodgy socket then.0

Thanks scheming_gypsy. I'll try them individually in other socket to test it.0

I've tested the second slot on it's own and it's working fine. It's getting curiouser and curiouser!0

Both slots are working and both sticks are working ... just not together!
Should I give up and just be happy with 1 x 512mb? I hate the thought of wasting money buying 2 and just using 1.0
