There could be a bios setting but I don't know the dell 3000 but it seems to recognise it, have you tried a live Linux Disc eg Ubuntu or even SYSRESCUED , they usually give you the option of running memtest , just an idea.

Edited or hirens bootcd too ...

Try running it with the original 256MB RAM module in the first slot and a 512MB module in the second slot...and vice versa if necessary.
  • That's pretty weird.
It's always recommended to run two of the same sticks when updating ram and your computer model should be able to take 1gb of memory per slot, so it's strange it's not booting, when you're only using half of that per slot.
I don't know if this will work, but go into bios and turn OS Install to OFF, then go to exit with saving. As if OS Install isn't set to OFF it can effect installing ram.

This is not an unusual occurrence for this particular model. Sometimes it just goes away. :)

If the BIOS lets you, I'd try dropping the RAM speed down to PC2700 level. It'll probably be listed as 333MHz.

Good morning. The OS instal mode was at 'off' and the memory shows as 333mhz which is the PC2700 speed so I didn't change anything. Now going to have another go at swapping sequence of sticks to slots around to see if computer is in a better mood this morning!

Ive had issues like this before and it was the bios settings for the RAM that was wrong
I think one computer also had a dogy ram slot but after a good clean and plenty of messing about plugging and unplugging it seemed to accept it ok
