My ticket is about £4000 and about £4600 if done monthly. If I don't need a year, it is cancelled using a full months, weeks, days formula pro rata refund minus £10.

So for an maximum investment of £10 and the loss of interest on £4000 minus the initial month fee, I stand to make a near £600 return. I think that is a very good deal.

I can understand if you're not sure where you'll be in a years time, it might be a bit of a risk. But as others have said a refund from TFL should go most of the way to repaying what you owe your ex-employer. With a bit of luck though, you'll hopefully find new work, which may well be in the centre too, so an existing pass will still be useful. Will probably be useful as you dart all over town for interviews etc.

I guess I've been lucky, coming upto 10 years at my current company, been on season tickets for 9 of those years (the first year I lived closer and cycled), with a £200-300 odd saving each year, that's been not insignificant.
