Hi all,

Need to purchase a 1-6 pass where I will be using both underground and overground (rail) stations. Please can you help with

1) Is this better purchase from underground or overground stations?
2) what is the benefit?
3) any way to get a discount?
4) I am doing a daily loughton to bank commute are there any other cheaper options or is the travel card the best bet?

Reason I ask i heard if i purchased a underground 1-6 and if i am travelling on the rail network I cannot claim for any delays with the oyster..

Thanks in advance...

:)

It makes no difference where you buy it as to your delay compensation - there is a different procedure for the different modes of transport - underground, overground, national rail - and the procedure also differs as to whether you use Oyster or not. (On National Rail if you use Oyster your 'ticket' is a copy of your receipt for your Oyster travelcard)

Don't know of any way to get a discount - nor of any cheaper options, other than doing it solely by bus (1.5 hours plus)

Purchase it online (or at least top it up online). Much easier, than queuing up at the station, with the plebs who can't use a self service machine and want to debate the relative savings of a day pass and a return ticket... If you want to pay by company cheque, then you will have to go to the station (take id and proof of work address).

The benefit is you save around £200-300 a year over monthly passes.

Discounts: Become a full time student and get letter of proof from Uni and queue up at station. Or collect a claim voucher for each time the tube/train is late/delayed/crap. They're valid for 13months, should get you a few hundred quid off next years pass... Check if the company you work with offer an interest free season ticket loan, quite a few do, which helps spread costs.

Cheaper options: Get a bike, its only 12 miles each way. Or compromise get a folding bike, ride from home to Loughton station, jump off in zone 2 (Mile End ish), then ride the last three miles into office. That'll save you about £650 ish. Coming home from Bank will PITA, Central line Eastbound is packed solid by then. By Mile End it would have thinned out a bit. Will have to be a folded up bike to take on tube in rush hour or in the underground bits mind.

aaah dear. peak = no discounts. better off with a monthly pass *sad times* :(
  • One way to avoid the crowds to to take a national rail train from Liverpool street to Stratford, that section is rather quiet, the crowds from the Central Line join at Stratford.

Errr?! Monthly zone 1-6 pass is £193.60 per month. So £2323.20 a year. Where as the Yearly zone 1-6 pass is only £2016. That's £307.20 cheaper. So unless you're taking two months each off on holiday, why would you bother going monthly?!
  • And an annual ticket gives you 34% off National Rail fares in the South East (after 10am on weekdays).

By not buying a monthly ticket for the periods you are on holiday and by buying odd period tickets to fit round them then buying monthlies MAY work out cheaper

Its also worth noting that if you have an annual Gold Card (aka season ticket wholely in the old Network South East area) you can also buy a second Network Railcard for £1 - Give to your wife/husband/mistress as an extra Chistmas present or something.............

oh come on, this is a moneysaving website, no?
