Giffgaff seems similar to my O2 but I get the impression I have to top up every so often (their website seems to suggest once every month?). I don't want to get into a regular payment for a service I will not be using!

As other posters have said, you don't have to top up monthly for giffgaff. You can buy 'goodybags' which last for a month (but you don't have to buy them every month) e.g. £5 for 300 texts + 60 mins, or just top up by e.g. £10 when you want/need to and use payg. I use giffgaff, that's definitely how it works.

I'm sorry but I've been up all night and therefore a little slow mentally.

OK - I may seem to have missed something...

With Giffgaff there is a difference between goody bags and top up.
    ie
    - topup is just credit, then payg
    - goody bags are time limited

A goodybag is optional, I don't need to purchase them

Am I correct with the above?

Giffgaff goodybags will expire in a month, so perhaps not suitable.
How about ASDSA Mobile, 6p text, 10p per min?
Prices have just risen, but for emergency use this won't be much of an issue.

Really? I thought Virgin Mobile does not have an expiry date (though not great tariff), or at least last time when I was with them. Has it changed?

That's what I said! "I think all the networks have PAYG with no credit expiry,"

Thanks for your suggestions so far.

I don't want internet or any other services
    - just very low volume for the occasional texts and calls
    - perhaps sometimes no use at all in some months.

My 'other phone' has O2 PAYG where as long as I make a call every 6 months I don't have to do anything else. My credit remains if I don't top up.
I would like a similar service for my new phone.

It seems to me most services appear to take back credit after a period of time and expect me to top up on a regular basis.

Giffgaff seems similar to my O2 but I get the impression I have to top up every so often (their website seems to suggest once every month?). I don't want to get into a regular payment for a service I will not be using!

Have O2 changed their conditions then? If not then why not just get an O2 phone on PAYG just like your 'other phone'?

In any case most standard PAYG services are exactly like your O2 PAYG. I don't know about GiffGaff and the like.

My kids have standard Vodafone PAYG, I think I topped them up 2-3 years ago with a fiver and most of the credit is still there. We make sure a call is made at least every 6 months.

yes. Goodybags are optional. Giffgaff is really good, I would recommend, and I have nothing to do with the company. Transferring my number from my previous provider also went v. smoothly.

    icardmobile looks interesting.
They have a low rate with no frills.
Looks like a toss-up between icardmobile and giffgaff.

Many thanks for all your postings. :T
