And if the car is an import from outside the EU it doesn't even have to be E marked.
Mine has a custom exhaust fitted, so no E markings, but I also had them fit a second silencer where the cat used to be (again, perfectly legal due to the age of the car, and passes the MOT emissions regulations). They're not the quietest silencers in the world but between them they do the job, the car is a lot quieter than my GF's 200SX with it's E marked Mongoose exhaust.0 -

If you don't say anything nice to say...
I've got perfectly decent double glazing and I'm set well back from the road, with a row of trees between us and the road - but I can still here some idiots chavving past in their novas...And that's assuming I don't have the windows open in the summer etc...Just ask him to look at making it quieter - he might not know it's so noisy!
Sure he knows exactly how "manly" his exhaust sounds...
I quite agree with the post above, though...with the cost of petrol these days, how can it possibly make any kind of financial sense to drive round a paper round? Surely it's going to cost nearly as much as you earn!?0 -

Pretty sure that's wrong. The law is the same for both and the MOT is the same test - The noise level is down to the tester and shouldn't be significantly louder than a similar standard car/bike.
Bikes were kite/e marked before cars though because it is easy to inspect. the excuse for cars was that you need to get under them to check out markings.

No it's correct, grumpy people don't like bikes
There's no actual law on noise from cars...... The MOT noise and emissions test is based around vehicle specifications and the regulations in place when the vehicle was produced. If the regulations for example say 80db and the manufacturer states 70db, the car can fail for being 75db.
A 2010 car would fail if it made half the noise my kitcar makes.... My car was built in 1996 but registration number is XXX ###V (1980) and it's noise/emission tested to the regulations of that year.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Ah but there is also no noise test for bikes as part of the MOT either. Pretty sure the rules are the same for cars and bikes regarding that.
Good thread here on a Scooby http://bbs.scoobynet.com/scoobynet-general-1/421548-illegal-exhaust.html apparently Subaru have it covered but they took the issue rather seriously! Ducked out on going to court though, paid the FPN for the owner.
Sure its why Ferrari etc have flaps in the exhaust so that it is ok at tickover but loud when you open the taps.

Rover / MG did the same thing with the MG F, but this was to meet EU regs.
The more I think about this, the more im convinced that in fact for the MOT noise it not measured at all, only emissions and gas tight structure.
BUT as many aftermarket exhausts do such things as removing the cat (de-cat), this would cause an emissions fail.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

There is no actual noise (Db test) as part of the MOT for bikes or cars, just the testers opinion that the exhaust is louder than standard (as said).
A de-cat does not mean an MOT fail either.
A well done de-cat with the engine mapped will give more performance, use less juice and not affect emissions at all. I know, I've done it

A decat will soon mean a fail, needs to be visible sign of a cat on cars that were designed to have them, think the change happens on the 1st July.0 -
