Advice on muppet with noisy exhaust

Not sure if this is the right place to post, but seems more appropriate than others... so here goes.

For many months I and my wife have been woken around 5.30am by a noisey exhaust on a car in our neighbourhood. Recently we discovered it belongs to a paper delivery person delivering newspapers to 3 residents in our road. He is driving a M reg VW Golf and from its outward appearance (seen from our bedroom window) it seems to have been customised, possibly with a non standard exhaust.

We have also found out from a local resident who the company is that employs this delivery agent.

What is the best course of action from this point on? I assume we could approach the newspaper delivery company? My concern is that they are not directly commiting any offence and may simple pass on our complaint to the paper delivery person. This would give him our details should we decide to involve the police and this could latter involve some vendetta against us.

The second option is to contact our local police and I assume file a disturbance of the peace complaint. If we go this route can anyone say whether it's likely to lead to a successful outcome or will it most likely come to a dead end once a warning has been issued to the driver?

Finally I assume we can approach the noise abatement section at our local council and get them involved.

So what advice can folks give?

Take his numberplate and report him to the police. I'm pretty sure there's legislation governing how much noise a car can make or something along those lines, particularly at that hour of the morning. :)

the person running the car is in their employ
if no joy complain to council and police
its quite possible this car isnt insured for paper deliveries

and or the modifications but lets try the nice approach first

remember nobody but your self might see it as an issue

i had a similar problem a few years ago moved house and a neighbour had his van ticking over for a good hour before he went to work in the winter ,i woke up early one morning (im a heavy sleeper) and the wife said it happened every work day, anyway i went down and told him the error of his ways and all the other neighbours thanked me as non of them had the guts to stand up and be counted

he moved soon afterwards doubtless doing the same thing in his new abode

Get a car with an even noisier exhaust and run it at 1am when he's trying to sleep....
  • cant see the coucil doing anything TBH and the police well open to debate really, if its got a hole in it causing the noise a possible fine and told to correct but if its a sealed exhaust system annoying as it may seem the police cant do anything about it except advise that he leave the car at home when doing paper round as its waking up residents.

your best bet is his employer, asking them politly that their worker keep to the end of the street as his exhaust system is waking you in the mornings.

as for his insurance, well its upto you, you could report him to the police on a whim that he doesnt have buisiness cover and commuting, he probably end up with a fine and 6 points (and if he has passed his test within 2 years end up being banned from driving and resitting both tests) for his trouble of trying to make a few quid to make ends meet.

Perhaps it's time to drag yourself into the 21st century and get new windows?
