Not in the "nice" part of Wapping I used to work there at News Int so not too far from Tower Hill.
  • I would check if private parking will give you cheaper insurance - it often doesn't! My neighbours got a lease on a garage behind our building, nice and secure, private rd etc, but no reduction in insurance!
Give yourself a Chistmas bonus £14 a week!
    Total so far £28

I grew up in Leyton and I think the "gang" issues are not too problematic because, as someone else has mentioned, the gangs generally focus their attention on other "gangs" and you would not really notice the problem. Overall these areas are OK to live in but it depends what you are used to!

If you want to look for a pleasant area of East London, and on the central line, I would recommend wanstead/south woodford/woodford. There are other areas (where I now live) with a higher ethnic mix e.g. redbridge/gants hill which are good areas - again on the central line and in zone 4.

Linux it's worth looking at Wapping, there are good areas (and bad ones). But nothing beats going and seeing places to get a feel for them. Be aware that East London is a bit grimy, but in your price range it may be something you have to accept. If you are coming from out of London anywhere may be a bit of a shock. I'm not saying East London is fabulous, but its a perfectly liveable area! And seriously, around Stratford is going to be quite good for the next few years as they do all they can to make it TV friendly.

Cheap places area a stepping stone, after a few years you can move to other areas if you want. And places are all generally safe if you walk confidently and just be part of the furniture - ie don't act too much like a tourist!

If you really don't find anywhere, then I think you need to look seriously at houseshares. You will get more space, albeit shared, possibly in a nicer area. Plus you can share bills. It's harder to find places that will accept a couple, but they are around.

Come to Barking, It is being regenerated and is becoming a nice town again.

I go past these flats a couple of times a week on my way to the bit Tesco which is moments away.

I agree with this post, prices are a little lower as you go further afield, and you get more spacefor your money. I would suggest bypassing TH and Newham and looking for a home in the borough of Redbridge, there are lots of new-build flats around Gants Hill station, and local ameneties are great. Newbury Park is another good option, neither are congested like East Ham, Manor Park etc and I would argue that the Central line is more reliable than the District. Don't go too far out though, I would not recommend Barking & Dagenham to a London newbie.

I strongly disagree, I wouldn't wish Barking on my worst enemy's dig! (not that I have any)
