Okay, we taxed it this morning and decided to go for a drive into town...only for the gearbox to fail just as we were turning left at a roundabout.
Phoned OH's dad who, after a couple of hours, managed to come and look at it. Apparently the gearbox is stuck in either 3rd or 4th gear but the actual gearstick isn't really connected to anything. He managed to drive it to a Halfords autocentre who said that the gearbox would cost more to replace than it's worth yada yada. OH doesn't really care about the cost. It's his dreamcar.
Anyway, OH's dad was driving it and the whole gearbox compartment lifted up and he noticed that a bolt is missing that should connect things so he's hoping that getting the same bolt will fix it, rather than having to pay £700 to have it replaced.
OH's dad managed to drive it home at a constant 40mph (and people overtaking gesturing to him that he's a !!!!!!!).
Such a long day has really !!!!!!ed my M.E up.

Probably just fallen out somewhere.
I hope it's an easy fix, good luck.0 -

if the gear stick isn't connected it could be an easy fix. I got a short shift gear stick for my car and it just bolts on the the gear linkage (well i think that's what it is).. so if it's not connected it could be that the bolt for that has fallen off so when you move the gear stick it doesn't move anything at the gear box end0

Sorry to bump this old thread, but I'm potentially spending a lot of money on a new car (Mk2 Audi TT) that I've just realised the MOT is due next month... the car has been incredibly well looked after to an impressive level, and the guy seems nice/genuine, but I'm still a bit worried - should I be?0

Find out why it has not been MOT allready, or should be done as soon as the old date is kept(28days?).
check the MOT history.
