What are the wrong reasons ? why is it wrong to buy something local ?

Insurance is an issue no matter how far you travel to buy a car as is the cost of fuel and even more if you then need to take 2 people in a car to collect.
Short MOT is not really a problem as if it passes it is only £20 to £40 depending on where you take it and to be honest anything can fail the MOT, newish or old. cheap or expensive. I have had an £85 van pass and a 1k plus car fail when I thought it would be the other way around.

They also did say they were happy to pay the tax in the first post so clearly have already got that worked into the cost..as everyone would as it also means you can bargin a bit and maybe get it down slightly.

S/he didn't say it was wrong to buy local.
Can we just take it as read I didn't mean to offend you?

yes... the MOT. But you don't MOT a car when you're buying it, so if there's 3 months left on the MOT and a problem with the brake lines, you're not going to know.. the same goes if there is 7 months on the MOT.

yes, but they were checked 5 months ago, in comparison with 9 months.

Average car usage is 10-12k miles per year so 150k over 15 is average. Yes that cambelt is well past. I'd ask them to MOT (their not great but at least it's a second opinion on condition and they will be able to look underneath at things such as exhaust and bushings which are highly likely to be worn) it but would bargain it into the cost, why offer to pay out more? In my opinion I wouldn't be looking at anything with a GTI badge on it for that kind of money - likely to have had a much harder life than an equivalent say 1.6 shopping version. At this price level you really can't expect perfection but you should be able to pick up a base level vehicle which is road worthy and reliable.

    Just an update:

I feel a bit silly. I totally misunderstood the cambelt thing. When he said 60,000 miles I thought he meant that that was the last time the cambelt was changed, when infact he meant that it needs to be changed at every 60,000 miles and that it was last changed at 130,000 miles.:o I'm an idiot. :o

Went to see the car today with FIL. Him and OH took it for a drive and it drives really well. The seller (he's a private seller) has agreed to get a new MOT for it and we'll give him the money for the MOT. We put a deposit down, just so he knows that we're not timewasters.

It's a P reg (not sure how old that is. :o).

If its the 1.8 20v engine, the head gaskets fail quite regular when they get old.
Starts as misfire when cold with water dripping from exhaust.
Its a shame because it is a cracking engine when it runs right.
