Car hire - crossing international borders

Anyone got any recent experience of driving a hire car between two countries?
In particular, crossing the Spanish/Portuguese border?
Wondering if there are any exclusions or excesses that may get added onto the bill by the hire companies for doing this (car is to be returned to the point of origin - so it's not a one way trip)
Thanks all

I don't see how you will have a problem. You usually don't stop at the border, just drive through it. I wouldn't think the car hire co would know anyway.Be thankful for what you have because it could all be taken away tomorrow.;)

You would have to read each car hire companies T&c's.....they do vary.
The only time you will have a problem when crossing the border into a country that is not on your car hire agreement is if you have an accident or have a breakdown.
Then you are well stuffed !!0 -
It's usually fine. E.g., see Hertz Ts & Cs..

It should be fine within the EU, I've crossed the 'border' many times between Vila Real in Portugal and Ayamonte in Spain in hire cars.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0

Some (not all) Spanish hire companies don't like their cars going out of Spain, so it's best to check
And some have tracking devices on their cars so they would know.0 -
Yeah but who hires from Hertz these days !!!!
Its the cheapo companies T&C's that you will have to watch........
From Goldcar
If you pick up your vehicle in our Barcelona, Gerona, Reus or Bilbao offices and you wish to travel to France and/or Andorra, it is necessary to take out special cross border insurance. This insurance is also necessary if you pick up your vehicle in our Granada, Sevilla, M!laga, Jerez or Sancti Petri offices and you wish to travel to Portugal and/or Gibraltar. It is not permitted to travel outside Spain from offices other than the aforementioned. If you plan to drive off the island where you pick up the car –in the Canary or Balearic Islands- you must hire an additional insurance. If you pick up your vehicle in our Faro (Portugal) office, it is only permitted to travel to Spain inside the autonomous community of Andalusia, for which it is not necessary to hire any additional cross border insurance.0 -
