  • This is really interesting, I think it's ace you're doing this CS, it will benefit so many people!

I read through my old Direct Line home and contents insurance policy docs and it doesn't say anything about BR in there if that helps.

    Marks and Spencer say:

Regarding bankruptcy on the Marks and Spencer Policy we would be happy to accept providing:

    1) the proposer has not been bankrupt in the last 18 months
    2) the bankruptcy has been discharged
    3) the proposer is not self employed.

They encourage people to apply online at www.marksandspencer.com/money

Their website makes an assumption there has never been any bankruptcy but I am assured so long as the three terms are met there is no issue. The person I spoke to has flagged this up with the company's 'Voice of the customer' programme and also will be flagging up my comments about how their quotes will appear on price comparison sites if someone confirms they have been bankrupt.

Well there's a positive result - although I'm planning on going self employed in the future so at least I know never to approach M&S for insurance, lol.
When I joined, I needed a name. The forum members gave one to me...I am INAN :D

  • Swiftcover say they are happy to provide cover so long as there has been no-one in the household who has been bankrupt during the past two years.

My insurance is up in a month (just contents) and I was dreading dealing with it. I am currently with Swinton, so called through to discuss the renewal and told them of my BR status, a short while later they called back to say that all but 1 of their panel of insurers were fine with it, and have gone with Zurich, which has wored out £2 a month cheaper than last year! Result!

In the interim, I phoned Co-op, and they were fine, so long as you wanted to pay in full (ie not monthly) if in BR's name, or if proposer was my husband (not BR0 he could pay monthly.

  • AA Insurance advise they only need to know about a current bankruptcy, not a discharged bankruptcy.
  • AXA group now confirm they have no problems with bankruptcy so long as it wasn't in the last two years (the M&S/Swiftcover brands of AXA have already confirmed this).

Hastings Direct say they shouldn't have any problems (none of their underwriters refuse quotations) and most of their underwriters do not consider a discharged bankruptcy to be relevant but they ask people call them for a quote first. They also say if you opt for paying on instalments a credit check will be ran.

Been discharged for a few years now but check back occasionally to see if I can help with any topics and I'm renewing my home insurance at the moment.

Gocompare do ask if you have been bankrupt and as way of an experiment filled in the form correctly and got 14 companies willing to offer cover. Unchecked the bankruptcy box and got 59 quotes!! 22 were cheaper than my cheapest bankruptcy declared quote, the cheapest being some £102 cheaper. Of the 14 willing to cover me most of their quotes remained the same whether bankrupt or not.
